自幼秉承家学，酷爱习书作画。
1916年10月19日生。
1934年在天津商业学校毕业，历任天津吉昌公司和三井洋行职员，北平厚生织布厂副经理、振丰煤矿职员及北平德聚涌面粉厂驻沪办事员。许麟庐先生自幼习书作画，23岁与著名画师溥心畲先生结为忘年交，经溥先生数年指点，才情尽露。
1939年后受益于溥心畲先生在绘画、书法理念和技艺上的指点；
1945年拜齐白石为师，伴随左右13年得其真谛。他从事笔墨丹青六十余载，博览研读近万家历代名家作品，吸收了石涛、朱耷、吴昌硕等诸家的笔墨技法并创造性地吸收了民间艺术和京剧艺术融入自己绘画之中。经半个多世纪的刻苦敬业形成了个人独特艺术绘画风格，其作品在国内外享有盛誉。其传略被载入《1985-1991年世界名人录》和《1987年大洋洲及远东世界名人录》。
1945年经国画大师李苦禅介绍，拜写意画宗师齐白石为师，13年间一直相伴左右，研墨理纸，耳濡目染间心心相印，深得齐派艺术的真谛，而且师生无间如亲，三日不见即怅然若失。新中国成立后，在北京大华面粉厂任经理。 1953年创办和平画店，任经理。
1956年在中国美术家协会美术服务部工作。次年起在北京荣宝斋工作，曾任编辑室主任。
1982年加入中国国民党革命委员会，为民革中央团结委员、监察委员。
1984年10月 退休。
1987年2月被聘任为中央文史馆馆员。

许麟庐主张继承传统，博采众长，更应发展传统，
不断创新。他牢记白石老人的教导“学我者生，似我者亡”；“要学我的心，不要学我的手”。并强调“人品至上，人没有豪气，画也没有豪气”。还强调作画要“寻门而入，破门而出”。经过苦学苦炼，他创造了独特的风格，成为继承和发扬齐派艺术的得力弟子，多次受到白石老人的称道，如曰：“启予者，麟庐也。”许麟庐作画时，一气呵成，笔力遒劲奔放，酣畅淋漓，神形兼备。无论大幅小品、花鸟鱼虫，貌似随意挥就，而又不失法度，处处见浓淡兼施之精，干湿互济之妙，疏密穿插之巧，真可谓满纸豪情，令人赞叹。他的作品多次参加国内外大型画展；在国内外不少博物馆、美术馆、纪念堂馆、饭店宾馆等均有收藏，不少报刊、电视台有专版、专题介绍；国外许多博物馆和收藏家也视之为珍品。人民出版社、
山东人民出版社和瑞典博物馆分别出版了许麟庐画册。
许麟庐自幼学习书法，善行草，章法严谨，气韵生动，笔势奔放，独具一格。他又是著名的古今书画鉴赏家。由于他在书画艺术特别是绘画艺术方面的突出成就，其传略曾被载入1985—1991年英国《世界名人录》和1987年《大洋洲及远东名人录》。

在从事笔墨丹青的近70年中，许麟庐博览历代大家名作，吸收石涛、朱耷、扬州八家、赵之谦、吴昌硕的笔墨技法，并将民间艺术风格和京剧表现形式，融入自己的绘画。如当代著名书画、史论家黄苗子先生评论时所说：“许麟庐孜孜屹屹于绘画创作，形成了他在当代画坛中的一枝独秀。他深得白石以形写神的窍妙，借物象以表达笔墨，用笔墨表达内在的感受和情趣……他是以激情作画，写出个性、写出风格……成为白石老人卓有成效的门生弟子。”
2006年许麟庐修得九秩之寿，蒙各馆、院、协会、荣宝等诸方垂爱，假中国美术馆举办书画展，以拳拳之心祈教于艺林方家。

宋涤(清华大学美术学院教授)：许老师的画有绝对独到的笔墨特征和个性造型特征。看许老师的用笔，我称之为“方笔法”。他的线条是方的，用墨块造型也是方的，有一种现代造型意识和美感。
