马公愚

马公愚(1890-1969),本名范,初字公驭,后改公禺、公愚,晚号冷翁,因其斋名“畊石簃”,故又署畊石簃主,永嘉城区(今温州鹿城区)百里坊人。永嘉马氏,自清以来,以诗文、金石、书画传家凡二百年。曾祖昱中(解元出身)、祖父兰生(名元熙),均工诗文书画。公愚幼承家学,稍长曾师承瑞安孙诒让、究心周鼎秦权、石刻奇字。后与兄孟容就读温州府中学堂。

人物生平

建国前
清光绪三十四年(1908)考入浙江高等学堂。宣统三年(1911)毕业后返里,次年创办永嘉启明女学。1914年创设东瓯美术会,后任教浙江省立十中。1919年7月,与郑振铎等发起组织永嘉新学会,提出“改革旧思想,创立新思想”的主张,次年出版《新学报》。1924年赴上海,先后任上海中学教员,存德中学、勤业中学董事长,上海美专教授,大夏大学文书主任兼中国文学系国文教授。1929年,与郑曼青、马孟容等创办中国艺术专科学校,并任书法教授。同年,教育部举办第一次全国美术展览,被聘为委员;后又应聘为“西湖博览会”美术馆委员。1933年,其作品参加柏林“中德美术展览”,后又参加“中日联合绘画展”及英国、意大利等地画展。1941年,与马漪等在上海大新画厅举办“永嘉五马画展”。战后美国画展及国内历次各大美展,亦均有作品参加。在此期间,还先后任上海美术会、中国画会理事,中华艺术教育社常务理事及上海市美术馆筹备处设计委员等职。
建国后
建国后,任上海文史馆馆员、上海中国画院画师,还兼任中国文字改革委员会委员,并参加中国美术家协会上海分会、上海中国书法篆刻研究会等。
公愚素有“艺苑全才”之誉。其书法,篆、隶、真、草,无一不精,真草取法钟、王,笔力浑厚,气息醇雅;篆隶更具功力,书名遍播大江南北。绘画擅长山水、花卉、鸟鱼等,篆刻取法秦汉,探本求源,无丝毫近人习气,但均为书名所掩。
文革中
“文化大革命”中备受折磨,而对艺事仍钻研不懈。1969年2月21日病逝于上海,终年75岁,遗体归葬温州。著有《书法史》、《书法讲话》、《应用图案》、《公愚印谱》、《畊石簃墨痕》、《畊石簃杂著》等;中国《现代篆刻选辑》(三)一书,收录其印刻53方。
 

艺术特点

海上艺苑的双子星座著名书画家马孟容(1892-1932)、马公愚(1893-1969)系兄弟伯仲,两人同时入塾发蒙,同时毕业,同时结婚,亦同时来上海涉足艺事。因而在三十年代被誉为“海上艺苑的双子星座”。
马孟容马公愚出生于温州书香世家,青箱家学,渊源有自,其祖父马兰笙曾印曰:“琴画传家二百年”。兄弟两人自幼习诗文,学书画,攻篆刻。及长后就读于温州府学堂,后入浙江高等学堂,毕业后双双返乡执教于温州中学,与朱自清等为同事,交谊深厚,朱自清在散文集《踪迹》中亦有记载。1929年,他们来到了风云际汇的上海,以勃发的开拓精神创办了“中国艺术专科学校”,孟容为国画教授,公愚为书法教授,从此活跃于海上文艺界,颇受前辈名家的推崇。
马孟容少年时在图画方面已见天赋。8岁时曾为其祖父画像,虽尚稚拙,但神态之逼真深为家长们所惊异。其父自民国之初闲居在家,专以金石书画自娱,孟容耳濡目染,深受熏陶。后来又拜著名画家汪如渊(香禅)为师,得其精华,当时就有出蓝之誉。但马孟容并不以此满足,深入生活,注重写生与观察自然,并尝试吸收西方绘画的某些特点融入国画。提倡宁雅毋俗,雅俗共赏的画风。为推动故乡的美术事业,他曾创建东瓯美术会。1926年,北伐军攻了浙江,省防军司令部聘他为宣传部主任。后应上海美专国画系主任郑曼青之聘,任该校花鸟画教授。当时出版的《中日现代绘画展览作品第一辑》评他“用笔初师白阳、南田,近则合宋元而自出心匠,工整雅素,当推花鸟妙手。”书画界极有声望的曾熙(号农髯,张大千的舅父)曾说“近时花鸟,求其笔致高雅,当推孟容。”

一代文化名人蔡元培先生曾以美学家的审美眼光评马孟容的绘画为:“吾国画有文人派与画院派之别,文人之作,大多气韵生动,寄托遥深,而放者为之,或流于疏脱;画院之作,大抵界画精细,描写逼真,而拘者为之,或失之板滞。孟容先生折衷两派,兼取其长,诚出色当行,有艺术价值之作也。”综观马孟容的丹青,格古而韵新,典雅而朴茂。其笔墨简约清逸,设色明丽和谐,构图疏朗灵动,意境内蕴丰澹,凸显了鲜明的个性风格。曾和吴昌硕王一亭赵叔孺等人雅兴联谊、诗文唱和。

马孟容的绘画曾在巴拿马万国博览会、比利时博览会、法国美术展览会上获得好评。惜天不假年,英才早逝。为此,于右任先生手书:“愿爱孟容者努力,令其精神不死”。

素有“艺苑全才”之称的马公愚先生,长期寓居襄阳路颐得坊。马公愚学养深厚,造诣独到。精于文史金石,究心周鼎商金,朝夕用功精勤,运毫驰墨于素笺,铁笔纵横于印面。且辛勤栽培后生,桃李满门。系西泠印社社员,上海大夏大学文书主任兼中国文学系国文教授。马公愚的书法四体皆精熟而风格自出,尤以篆书和行草见长,篆书取意于金文、诏版、石鼓,笔调高逸古朴,气韵华滋浑穆。其行草则效法魏晋,线条刚健苍劲,笔致畅达圆融,颇为大气豪迈,因而他的招牌书写在当时曾独步书坛。马公愚的篆刻追踪秦玺汉印,气淳质厚,稳重静穆,具有内存的神韵气势。学者沈禹钟在《印人杂咏》中称曰:“退笔堆墙老未休,白眉才艺压时流。秦时小玺应参遍,玉印还从汉法求。”他的绘画也颇有书卷气,无论是花卉、翎毛、山水等,均清雅幽逸,诗意弥漫。马公愚解放后曾任上海文史馆馆员、上海中国画院画师、中国文字改革委员会委员。作为教授级的书画家,马公愚著述丰富,有《墨子间诂》、《古籀拾遗》、《书法史》、《耕古杂著》、《公愚印谱》等。三十年代的书画金石家,都有一个共同的特点:即学识宏富,气质高雅。马氏兄弟耕耘于艺林,亦得力于此。如此人文精神及从艺遗绪,是颇值当今艺人吸纳取法的。
