一九七一年王申勇出生于四川彭州的一个小乡村，自幼就与动物结缘的他，对猫狗相戏、牛羊食草的场景有着深厚的兴趣和情感，l7岁的时候，申勇跟随当地一名雕塑家学习素描、雕塑，这为他其后的中国画创作打下了极为坚实的造型基础，再其后他自学中国传统走兽图，大量临习历代大师巨匠们的动物画精典力作，以此了解前人的表现技法和立意造型。近现代动物画大师刘奎龄、刘继卣父子对其影响最大。1997年王申勇就读于杭州中国美术学院，其间作了大量的动物野外写生并研究各类动物的形态特征和生活习性，所有这些使他所绘制的工笔动物画的表现手法和风格面貌日渐成熟和完美。
