Paul Gauguin, a French post-Impressionist painter and sculptor, and Van Gogh and Cezanne are known as the three great masters of post-impressionism, which has a very far-reaching impact on the development of modern and contemporary painting. Born in Paris, France, Gauguin regards the essence of painting as something independent of nature, a creation of experience in memory, rather than the perceptual experience directly obtained through repeated sketches. Compared with most contemporary artists, his exploration is more influenced by primitive art, especially his obsession with the local customs of tropical islands in the South Pacific, which seems to be rooted in his family background and growing experience.
