油画家情有所牵：海滩、礁石、贝壳
张顺川是在海风的吹拂中长大的，对大海一往情深，海滩、礁石和贝壳成了他油画创作的主题。未接受过正规院校的系统教育本是缺憾，然而由于天赋独秉，勤思苦练，加上阅历丰富，反而使张顺川摆脱了学院派条条框框的羁绊，作品不事雕凿，不落俗套，清新自然，别具一番魅力。
早期，张顺川用笔粗犷，着色浑厚，海滩、礁石如刀砍斧削般充满力度，表现出强烈的质感和磅礴大气，作品主题鲜明，直抒胸臆，音调高昂，一如他豪放直率的性格。观其画作，犹如品尝浓醇美酒，令人酣畅欲醉。近年来，他用色转向淡雅简明，主题含蓄隽永，意境凄婉感伤。当画坛的权威学者为之击掌称奇时，殊不知这正是他内心痛苦的折射。
原来，为了汲取创作营养，张顺川足迹遍及祖国的海岸线。然而每到一处，触目皆是蜂拥的游客、遍地的垃圾、急功近利的开发和不伦不类的假景，大自然的如画美景被破坏殆尽。儿时常见的原始状态海滩，已难觅踪迹。
失望之余，他把敦煌壁画的色调糅进画中，幻化成一块块心中的圣地：《清晨》、《海滩》、《无言的世界》、《宁静的沙滩》、《海的失落》、《贝壳滩》……在他神奇的笔下，玲珑剔透的珍奇贝壳们复活了，它们或追逐嬉戏，或窃窃私语，把观者带入了罕无人迹的洪荒年代，令人不忍涉足。这也是他对人类世界的向往———没有物欲横流，没有尔虞我诈，处处充满温情。
当然，这样的梦幻之境是不现实的。于是，在一些作品中，他又“残忍”地添上几笔：碎瓷碗，快餐盒，空瘪的易拉罐。这些来自尘嚣的不速之客，打破了无言世界的安详和静谧。寥寥几笔，勾勒出画家内心的愤怒和无奈，作品的警示性和震撼力也由此而来。
有人说，画家的不幸不在于现有的名声小，不在于现有的价格低，而是在同行眼里的一晃而过。照此说来，张顺川是幸运的：每次参展，他的作品都能让中外同行驻足良久，咀嚼良久。
艺术历程
没有飘逸的长发，没有优雅的谈吐，没有常见的西洋画画家的翩翩风度，谈得兴起时会挽起裤腿，露出不穿袜子的裸脚，整个是率真质朴的农民形象。

1976年10月，“四人帮”跨台。张顺川一时心血来潮，在旧报纸上画了30多幅批判“四人帮”的漫画，张贴在村子里。下乡的公社党委书记见后大为赞赏。当时，公社正好缺报道员，便把他举荐了去。张顺川喜得像天上掉下一只馅饼。
次年元旦，24岁的农民张顺川洗净腿肚上的泥巴，诚惶诚恐地来到公社上班。当他用握惯了锄头的粗笨大手拿起笔时，才发现老师教的那几个汉字早就扔在田头了，几乎3个字中就有一个不会写。这年，他埋在书本堆里度过了一个个不眠之夜。到年底，县广播站一统计，在全县报道员中，张顺川上的稿最多。
领导发觉张顺川是棵苗子，第二年培养他当工办会计。最初，他的珠算从1加到100常常出错。于是，他的宿舍里通宵都是算盘声。一个月后，他参加宁波市的会计培训班，在300多名学员中，他的考试成绩窜到第五，让一些老会计干瞪眼。
做了3年会计后，他摇身一变又放起了电影。这个行当，要求自己会画电影海报。28岁的张顺川，总算又拿起了画笔。画海报之余，他尝试画国画，画粉画，渐渐地在十里八乡有了名气。
1984年，电影放映员张顺川辞职办企业，一晃就是10年。

张顺川是个经商奇才，几度纵横捭阖，就令同行刮目相看。他不沾烟酒，不会歌舞，惟一的爱好就是偷闲画几笔。几年下来，他的国画、粉画、电影海报多次入选省级画展。1989年，他成为浙江省美术家协会会员。
1990年的一天，张顺川买了一套意大利文艺复兴时期的油画作品集。翻开纸张考究的进口画册，他震惊了：天底下竟有如此精美的作品！画家想要表达的一切情感和语言，都被这些斑斓的色彩表现得淋漓尽致！
激情，从40岁的张顺川心底喷涌而出：我要画油画！他疯狂地购买古今中外的画册和理论书籍，入神地琢磨每幅画的色彩、线条、肌理、质感、光感、构图，常常一幅画会让他发几天呆。家里摆满了形形色色的染料和大大小小的画框，像是个染坊的杂物间。这年，他创作了第一幅油画《阳光初照》，并获得当年浙江省体育美展创作奖。
1994年，张顺川历时3个月创作的《海滩》入选第八届全国美展，并获省优秀作品奖。全国美展每5年举办一次，有意思的是，当5年前举办第七届全国美展时，张顺川还是一个油画门外汉。
此时的张顺川，正处于企业发展巅峰期，员工已达数百人。然而，他却作出惊人之举：退出商界，专心致志攻油画。商界同行的挽留，亲朋好友的劝解，都无法让张顺川改变初衷。他深知，鱼和熊掌不可兼得。
