汪志杰生于北平，祖籍安徽旌德。1947年毕业于上海育才学校美术系。1953年为首届中央美术学院毕业生，并于1955年为首届研究生毕业，留校任教。1980年调入上海画院、油画雕塑创作室。1983年负责创建上海华东师范大学艺术系，并任该系系主任、教授。1990年由文化部派遣赴法国巴黎访问，后旅居法国，为法国艺术家协会会员。
作品曾赴欧洲七国及苏联巡回展出及参加全国美展并获奖。
作品有油画《赛摩赛姆千佛洞前的流沙河》（获第六届全国美展银质奖章，为中国美术馆收藏），丙烯画《冰山之父—穆士塔格峰》、《穆士塔格峰下干涸河谷》，《高昌城下》、《圣墓前的女郎》等。
作品曾在日本、美国、西欧各国及台湾、香港等地展出。
