刘宇一，1940年生，南京人。1960年毕业于中央美术学院附中。中国著名油画家、国画家。擅长大题材油画，其画作深受国际艺术市场瞩目，为多个国家的博物馆、国家殿堂及各级机构和个人收藏。
历任广西人民出版社美术编辑、桂林画院画师、广西艺术学院副院长、广西书画院副秘书长。1960年开始从事艺术创作。是中国石韵绘画的开创者。 　　
现旅居香港，为香港宇一画院院长，南京大学、东南大学、洛阳大学客座教授。美国萨凡那艺术设计学院（国际艺术大学）人文学荣誉博士。第十届、十一届全国政协委员。

曾为200多位中国政要及各界名人画像，被作家丁玲称为“中国肖像画史上实属罕见的创举”。
1991年定居香港后，多次应邀为日本等国元首和政要画像，1988年至1997年又先后在香港为各界知名人士约150人作肖像，被誉为“举足轻重的肖像艺术大师”。
在1993、1994和1995年，以《良宵》、《女娲之歌》、《瑶池会仙图》三幅讴歌中华民族魂与魄的力作，连续三年在国际艺术舞台上创中国当代华人画家作品价位的世界纪录，报称“如发连环三响炮般，震鸣国际画坛”为艺术史创造辉煌。
1997年为迎接香港回归祖国，又创作出《良辰》、《世纪之航》及《东方之珠》等一系列力作，以艺术记载历史，受到海内外各界人士更广泛的欢迎和尊崇。美术作品已为美、英、法、德、日、意、香港、台湾等三十多个国家和地区的机构和人士收藏。作品还有《耘天》、《女娲补天》等。

刘宇一擅长重大历史题材油画，巨幅油画《良宵》《开国盛典》《伟业千秋》《人民万岁》《共铸乾坤》《京华胜景》《初春》《八一颂》等10余幅（其中部分与女儿刘浩眉合作），珍藏在人民大会堂、天安门
城楼、毛主席纪念堂、全国政协礼堂、中央统战部大楼、中央军委八一大楼和钓鱼台国宾馆等国家殿堂并在重要位置陈列；刘宇一的史诗性油画作品系列，讴歌中华民族的历史与辉煌，诠释时代精神，描绘伟大而美好的中国梦，用时代的经线和民族的纬线编织成民族复兴的画卷，表达波澜壮阔的时代洪流中的澎湃心声。因此他被誉为“共和国首席画师”、“热爱和尊重人民的艺术家”。
刘宇一是中国油画市场的开拓者与领跑者，20世纪90年代，他的画作进入国际艺术市场后，在香港先后四次打破亚洲油画拍卖纪录。1993年至1997年，刘宇一的四幅作品《良宵》《女娲之歌》《瑶池会仙图》《良辰》先后以836万、888万、1080万、2300万的价格成交，创下当时华人画家画价最高记录（屡次刷新自己的记录），引起国际艺术市场的广泛关注,报称“如发连环三响炮般，震鸣国际画坛”为艺术史创造辉煌。
20世纪80年代及至末期，刘宇一遍访文化教育界、科学技术界、民族宗教界等各行业名家，为华罗庚、茅以升、严济慈、赵朴初、冰心、巴金、叶圣陶、刘海粟、艾青、吴作人、谢添、袁世海等数百位名家创作了肖像，留下了一种“文化抢救”般的文化科学名人肖像。丁玲先生称他的肖像系列油画“为我国肖像画史上实属罕见的创举”、“具有可以传世的文献价值”；赵朴初先生称他“下笔如有神，唯妙复唯肖，岂是面目真，直是肝胆照”；刘海粟先生以“一管擎天笔，千秋动地歌”盛赞他的艺术；华罗庚先生称赞他“写真出真、求实得实”。
此外，刘宇一还为包括俄罗斯总统普京、美国时任总统克林顿、现任总统奥巴马、英国时任首相布莱尔、日本时任首相竹下登等200多位国家元首及各国政要创作了肖像作品，部分陈列于美国、俄罗斯、日本、比利时、委内瑞拉、卡塔尔、洪都拉斯等多个国家殿堂。20世纪的开卷之作《和平颂》收到包括时任联合国秘书长安南，时任美国总统克林顿、梵蒂冈教皇保罗二世等世界50余个国家首脑（或政府）热情洋溢的来信，表示肯定和赞赏。刘宇一还受邀为美国总统奥巴马夫妇、美国前国务卿希拉里等政要创作的肖像作品被相关单位作为国礼。刘宇一的作品为美、英、法、德、日、意等30多个国家和港、澳、台地区的机构和社会名流收藏。刘宇一的肖像画驰名画坛，被国际媒体誉为“举足轻重的肖像艺术大师”。[2]
刘宇一与女儿刘浩眉历时7年两千多个日夜艰辛创作的百米油画长卷《奥林匹克颂》[6]  （长118米、高5米）在北京奥运会期间成功展出，其时萨马兰奇、罗格等国际奥组委官员，贾庆林、李长春、刘淇、刘延东等中央领导人、各国运动员和普通观众游客等观众到场参观，引起强烈反响。画卷将百年来共29届夏季奥运会、20届冬季奥运会的举办国家（城市）、吉祥物、标志、历任奥运会主席和对奥运会有特殊贡献的人士及在任执行委员、多次摘取金牌或有突出贡献的世界著名体育人士等约2000多个人物和奥运88个比赛项目，表现在百米长卷中。国际奥组会主席罗格先生亲笔为长卷题写了画名。2014年，刘宇一又创作了以南京青奥会为背景的6米长卷（《奥林匹克颂》油画长卷长122米、高5米）。
《奥林匹克颂》长卷是世界上规模最大的架上绘画。它从古代希腊神话人物普罗米修斯盗运天火照亮和温暖人间，孔子、老子、屈原和古希腊哲人苏格拉底神游奥运、秦兵马俑和古希腊裸体运动员同场竞技开始，以奥林匹克圣火为主线贯穿全幅，越过千年之前的马球、蹴鞠，由1896年顾拜旦又在雅典开创现代奥运，直到2008年由中国人在北京将奥运圣火高高举起，倾情迎接第29届奥运会，在五环旗帜下，不同肤色的五大洲青年高举着圣火奔向未来的壮丽场景。画作通过古代奥运的神圣文明、战争岁月的和平梦想、战后崛起的吉祥曙光、奥运大家庭的友谊进步、新世纪之初的和谐盛世和五大洲青年共燃圣火奔向未来等六个篇章。在艺术形式上，画家采取写实与浪漫相统一、古典与现代相结合的手法，力求以精湛的绘画技巧体现深刻的人文内涵，一卷纵览百年奥运。受到国际奥组委原主席萨马兰奇与罗格的高度称赞，并引起海内外强烈反响。
