1973年毕业于中央工艺美术学院，近几年来活跃于国际艺坛上。余友涵是在上世纪中国85美术新潮和90年代政治波普等艺术演进中影响到中国当代艺术史的先锋人物之一。他一系列的抽象“圆”，和以毛泽东为主题的色彩明艳、花朵鲜簇的绘画表现了对中国大半世纪以来文化史的个人看法。近年来他利用在沂蒙山山区拍摄的照片开始了“沂蒙山”风景人物绘画系列创作。余友涵1973年毕业于中央工艺美术学院，现任教于上海工艺美术学校。
曾参加的展览有：1989年北京中国美术馆（中国现代艺术展）、1992年（毛走向波普；1989年后的中国）、1993年（第四十五届威尼斯双年展）和德国柏林（中国前卫艺术展）、1994年（第二十二届巴西圣保罗双年展）、1997年葡萄牙国家协会（十五位中国当代艺术家）等。
