公之、红蘅生、因香庵主、忘牧学人、怀橒子、鹤槎山民，晚号箬庵、梦盦。嘉定(今属上海)诸生。早岁问业于陈文述，留吴门(今江苏苏州)甚久。与吴县潘曾莹、杭州钱杜、嘉兴郭容光、常熟蒋宝龄等为诗画友。他仰慕明末嘉定四先生的人格，自号蘅乡，又刻有"小松圆阁"印和"四先生里人"印。居室署名"画山楼"和"小鸥波馆"。他的绘画得钱杜指授，又上追李流芳、程嘉燧，出入王敬铭和张鹏翀，笔墨沉厚苍茫，意境萧疏。能诗词，擅长骈体文。篆刻以丁敬、黄易为法，上溯秦汉。他以艺文之名盛播于江浙。陈云伯评述他"抱鸾凤之姿，挹烟霞之气，诗情画境一如其人"。子祖庆，号稚蘅，亦善山水，笔墨幽秀。著有《以恬养智斋诗初集》《以恬养智斋诗二集》《尊璞堂诗文集》《虞山游草》《红蘅词》《练水画徵录》《箬庵画麈》、《小松圆阁杂著》《小松圆阁印存》等书。
