恽冰，清初画坛"四王吴恽"中恽南田家族的后裔。她自幼潜心于花鸟画创作，不仅整日观摩家中所藏恽南田的画作，掌握表现技法，而且常观察房前屋后的花草 、虫蝶，从中汲取大自然赋予的创作灵感。成年后，嫁同郡毛鸿调为妻。清吴德旋《初月楼续闻见录》记载他们"筑小楼，夫妻吟诗作画以老焉"。婚后良好的文化环境有助于恽冰的艺术日臻成熟。其花鸟画注重逼真写实，造型生动传神。花瓣常以水墨着色晕染，通过灵动多变的用笔，把墨、色与画中的形象完全融为一体;茎枝、叶筋以娴熟的笔力一笔勾就;叶片注重阴阳向背的处理关系，颇具立体感。她与以擅勾染闻名的马荃合称为清代女性画坛双绝。吴德旋《初月接续闻见录》中云:"时武进恽冰画，以没骨名。而江香(马扶曦女)以勾染名，江南人谓之'双绝'"。子凤朝、凤梧、凤仪均习画，孙女周尤能得其笔意。

恽冰存世的作品很多，有故宫博物院藏《蒲塘秋艳图》、《华春双艳图》、《南山佳色图》、《紫藤月季图》、《紫霞朱帐图》;上海博物院藏《春风鸜鹆图》及广州市美术馆藏《南山秋艳图》。北京故宫博物院明清书画陈列馆曾经展出过一幅恽冰画的《藤花翠鸟图》扇面画，此图用没骨法画折枝紫藤，由右向左伸展，花疏叶茂，虬枝飘荡，紫膝上一鸟窝。内有四只小鸟，张着小嘴，喳喳鸣叫;一翠鸟嘴衔一虫，飞向窝来哺育小乌。笔墨不多，生动有趣。此幅扇面画画面构图新颖，笔墨清秀，色彩艳丽，别有风致。自题:"四月藤花香满衣，清於恽冰"。下钤"恽冰之印"白文方印、"兰陵大史"朱白文印。
