汤池，1933年10月出生，浙江武义人。1961年毕业于北京大学历史系考古专业，后到中央美术学院美术史系任教副教授、教授，曾任美术史系副主任、图书馆馆长。致力于美术史系的专业建设和中国美术史的学术发展，在上古美术、美术考古专业领域建树颇丰。
汤池是我国著名美术史家、教育家，在中国古代美术史与美术考古领域有杰出的贡献。汤池勤于笔耕、教书育人、扶掖后学、恪尽职守，为我国培养了大批美术史、美术理论研究的高级人才，为中国美术事业做出了重要贡献。
汤池著有学术论著《中国美术全集绘画编12墓室壁画》《中国美术全集雕塑编2秦汉雕塑》及《中国美术简史》等，论文《黄河流域的原始彩陶艺术》《曾侯墓漆画初探》（合作）、《秦及西汉时期的雕塑艺术》等。
