山东济南人，他7岁后入济南正宗救济会贫民小学、济南省立第二实验小学读书。
1948年考入济南市立第一中学，三个月即辍学参加革命，到烈士纪念塔委员会浮雕组当通讯员。
1950年参加中国人民解放军第三野战军二十四军教导团。
1951年调济南话剧团当演员，嗣后又到济南城根小学任教导员。
1955年考入中央工艺美术学院，先后在工艺美术系、染织美术系学习。
1960年毕业后留校在装饰美术系当助教。
1963年调安徽轻工业局工艺美术室工作。
1965年下放淮南磁器厂劳动。
1978年调入安徽美协从事专业美术创作，曾任安徽画院副?院长等职。

韩美林在中年画家中成名较早，影响比较大，1979年他就在中国美术馆举办过个展，在香港举办韩美林装饰画展。1980年在美国二十一个城市巡回展出韩美林画展，影响颇大，圣地亚哥市赠送其金钥匙一把，纽约曼哈顿宣布1980年101月1日为“韩美林日”。1980年在美国纽约、波士顿等21个城市举办个展。1983年幅作品入选职事国发行的圣诞卡。1989年在台北举办画展；1991年在加拿大举办画展；1992-1994年分别在马来西亚、印度举办个展；1999年在中国美术馆举办“韩美林艺术展”，引起很大的轰动。曾应美国劳伦斯艺术学院及耶鲁大学之邀请讲学。已出版的画册有《美林画集》、《韩美林作品集》、《山花烂漫》、《尚在人间》、《百鸡图》、《纳崐头为画》《韩美林画集》、《韩美林工艺美术作品选》。还担任过剪纸美术片《崐狐狸打猎人》，剪纸动画片《狐狸送葡萄》、《捉迷藏》的美术设计。其中《狐狸崐打猎人》于1979年获南斯拉夫萨格勒布电影节最佳美?术奖。他还为中国邮票总公司设计了1983年《猪票》、1985年《熊猫票》、中国国际航空公司徽标?等佳作。近几年，韩美林将大部分精力与时间都投入到城市巨型雕塑创作上了，如已完成的大连老虎滩的《群虎》、济南的《天下第一牛》、淄博的《金鸡报晓》、蛇口的《神牛》、深圳的长30米、高20米，嵌?有元宝夜明珠的铜牛及高宽各50米的不绣钢巨雕《西楚霸王》。韩美林的动物画多在艺术市场出售，为收藏家所喜爱。目前韩美林作品还未见有进入两大拍卖行的记载，但在台湾画廊则成为固定出售品，定期办展?出售。1990年3?月由皇冠艺文中心出售的一幅水墨画是12000台币。1991年2月由同一画廊出售的?38×38公分的另一幅水墨画升到２万台币左右。
