上海人，1955年毕业于中央美术学院华东分院，同年留校在杭州任教。生前为中国美术家协会会员，曾任浙江美术学院中国画系副主任、浙江山水画研究会副会长等职。早年得到潘天寿、黄宾虹等人指导，1956年被校方派送到上海随陆俨少学习山水画并从此结下“风雨同舟”的30多年师生情谊，直到1980年陆俨少“冲破阻碍”（陆俨少语）调任浙江美术学院中国画系教授，终成一段“画坛佳话”。
姚耕云作品在20世纪60年代至80年代初期多次入选并获奖于全国性的美术作品大展，广为国内各大博物馆与海内外收藏家所收藏。1980年曾以中国美术家代表团团长的身份访问非洲四国。代表作品有连环画《新生》、中国画《归来》、《雁荡揽胜》、《山阴道上》、《霜叶红于二月花》等，系名画《毛竹丰收》的作者之一。
