张明，男，1959年12月5日出生于南京。毕业于苏州大学艺术学院，获艺术硕士学位。1989年毕业于苏州美专，2009年获苏州大学艺术学院艺术硕士专业学位。
2004年中国画《耕读人家》获文化部、中国美术家协会第十届全国美术作品展览铜奖并被中国美术馆收藏。2009年作品《香雪》入选第十一届全国美术作品展览。出版有《当代美术家精品集——张明》、《张明中国画作品集》、《乌克兰日记——张明乌克兰写生纪行》等专集、专著。
历任苏州市平江区文化馆文艺部创作员、江枫画院院长等职。2003年进入高校后，历任苏州工业园区职业技术学院艺术系副主任、苏州工艺美术职业技术学院数艺系造型基础部主任、二维动画专业方向学科带头人。
（2013年9月即将调任复旦大学上海视觉艺术学院副教授，硕士生导师，专业从事中国画教学与创作，调动手续正在办理当中）

张明的作品贴近生活，他的艺术灵感来源于他生活的江南，那些古街幽巷、断垣残壁、深院老树，一经他的画笔梳理，无序的景象顷刻主次分明，透出盎然生机，撩拨无数人的情怀。
张明的工笔重彩风景画，虽然是国画，但吸收了西画的明暗、光影和色彩，逼近照相写实，而局部又进行了虚化处理。他的作品贴近生活，师法自然，用精湛细腻的艺术手法去再现客观世界，其表现形式和绘画手法是当今主流艺术形式的典型。
在张明的作品中，最被人赞誉的是他的银杏系列作品。工整细密，敷设重色，采用工笔重彩画法，图式清晰，常结合古朴自然的农家院落、小桥流水一起构图，前后相衬，远近之景形成鲜明的对比。色彩明亮，画中的杏叶更以它特殊的扇面形状和和通透的亮黄色给人强烈的视觉冲击，让人印象深刻。
对于张明来说，艺术不是消遣，而是人类最真实的诗情和生活。在他的作品中越来越显示出了强烈的现实力量和强大的艺术生命力。从画里流露出来的不仅仅是一种宁静淳朴的乡土之美，而是更深沉更广阔的、整个人类的恋歌与乡愁。
