高守长，1955年生于大连，1969年随父母下乡，少年时代是在庄河农村度过的。然而与其它画家不一样的是，高守长喜欢上画画还缘于高中时参加县文化馆的一次美术创作班学习之后，凭着天资的聪慧和刻苦的学习，他开始了对绘画的热爱和追求，并从此将绘画作为终身为之追求和奋斗的目标。
高守长的绘画生涯是幸运的，七十年代初他在庄河工作时，一次偶然的机会参加了市里在金州电影公司举办的绘制幻灯片学习班，并在学习班里有幸结识了授课的张家瑞老师。张先生是国内外享有盛名的著名画家，也是一位“伯乐”，对人才偏爱的张先生经常为高守长“开小灶”并多次将其约至家中单独指导，这对于刚刚喜欢上画画的年青人无疑是一个巨大的鼓舞，从此高守长以极大的热情投入绘画之中，在张先生的循循教导下，经过勤学苦练，他的绘画技艺有了长足的发展。
回城后，高守长分配到市政设施修建总公司工会工作，修建总公司主要工作是筑路及城市建设，工作之余高守长经常深入到生产一线，与筑路工人吃住在一起，在长期的一线工作中，他与筑路工人们结下了深厚的情谊，并用蘸满激情的画笔和亲身经历沤歌筑路工人艰辛的工作和“以苦为乐”的奉献精神。他经常为报刊杂志制作插图，晚上灯下木刻，休息日出去写生，他创作的“大路歌”系列作品，受到了业内人士的好评并获奖。《大路歌之一》就是他为筑路工人创作的一幅精彩画卷。烈日炎炎，一位穿着防护衣的筑路女工，站在轰鸣的沥青车前，手持喷油枪、英姿飒爽地喷洒着乌黑的沥青，汗水早已湿透了防护衣，可从她炯炯有神的目光中却流露出对即将峻工道路的喜悦之情。在欣赏这幅水彩画作品时，高守长动情地说，这是一幅以真人真事为样本的作品，画面上的主人公是新长征突击手，筑路队里唯一的一位女喷油工，为了让城市道路更加宽阔平坦，她和男同志一样，每天超负荷地坚守在筑路岗位上，日复一日，年复一年，他（她）从不叫苦喊累，正是这种无私奉献、默默无闻的主人翁精神，为我提供了巨大的创作源泉，《大路歌》系列作品就是这样创作出来的。许多年过去了，现在的筑路工人已经使用上了现代化的工具，再也不用喷洒沥青了，然而当年这幅反映筑路工人艰辛劳动的场景，却深深地烙在了人们的脑海之中，让人们久久不能忘怀，这就是绘画的真谛，这就是艺术的魅力所在。

高守长是一位多才多艺的画家，三十多年来，在诸师的关怀指导下，他绘画的内容、范围非常广泛，水彩画、水粉画、油画、国画，还创作过木刻等等，并且这些绘画作品几乎都参加过省市及全国的各类展且收获颇丰。工笔画《大路歌系列之二》获得了2006年全国第六届工笔画大展铜奖；水彩画《大路歌系列之一》、《船工》作品入选中国首届水彩画艺术展和全国第四届水彩粉画展；国画《纱厂怒潮》入选中国美协举办的“纪念‘九一八’事变六十周年中国画展”并获佳作奖；水彩画《阳光下的船坞》获辽宁省美展铜奖等等。他还出版了连环画《胜利的花环》、《不成功的抢劫》以及为长篇小说《生死线上的奇遇》绘制插图等，还为众多报刊杂志绘插图500多幅，可以说是一位“高产”画家了。
