黄云，原名黄祖江，广东新会人。1931年9月出生于广东恩平。五十年代便有雕塑、宣传画、漫画、版画等作品发表和参加省市及全国美展。1959年进入中央工艺美术学院攻读壁画专业本科，1964年毕业留校任教。1972年应约为《光明日报》、《人民中国》等报刊撰写评论文章。1974年调回广州美术工作室任国画组组长。1980年广州中国画会成立，选为副会长。1982年广州画院成立，为画院专业画家，院务委员兼国画组组长。同时，在广州美术学院兼教，1986年在广州文化公园举办“黄云画展”。著名画家李可染、吴冠中、彦涵、袁运甫、赖少其、杨之光等题词祝贺，关山月、黎雄才等参加开幕式。《广州日报》及《广东画报》，发表广州美术学院教授于风、姜今及王立、杨羽仪等写的评介文章。广州美术学院教授黄谓渔在全国性学术刊物《美术史论》发表长篇学术文章《论黄云的山水画艺术》。著名画家张仃推荐在日本一美术杂志以整版篇幅介绍他的作品。有作品到澳大利亚、日本、美国、加拿大、荷兰、德国、泰国、新西兰等地展出，赴北京和香港等地参加展出文化交流活动。1987年调华南师范大学，创建和主持美术系工作。擅长国画山水画、壁画，特点质朴深厚、清新雅逸、装饰性强，富有生活气息，被誉为“北墨南韵”的画家。著有《中国山水画史》，出版《黄云山水画选集》。1993年应美国内布拉斯加大学邀请赴美国讲学，在纽约等地进行文化交流和写生，先后在奥马哈和洛杉矾等地举办“黄云画展”，创作国画《大地微微暖气吹》等，发表在全国各地报刊的有400多幅，美术论文《论中国画的装饰风》、《关于山水画的起源和演变》等，也发表50多篇。并有作品为省、市长作为礼品，赠送美国、日本、意大利等贵宾。有作品为国内外美术馆、美术学院和名人学者所收藏。有作品获省市专业文艺创作奖、首届红棉奖、优秀作品奖和国际凤凰杯荣誉金奖。出版大型画册《黄云画集》，并举办“黄云山水画研讨会”。现任华南师范大学教授、广州书画学院副院长、广州山水画研究学会会长、广州南大诗书画社社长、中原书画研究院名誉院长、新加坡新神州艺术院高级荣誉顾问、中国美术家协会会员、广州市文史研究馆馆员。
