著名国画家、美术教育家、徐悲鸿奖学金委员会委员、南京师范大学美术系教授、花鸟画硕士研究生导师、中国美术家协会会员、江苏省老年书画会理事、扬子江书画学会顾问谭勇先生,1918年出生于广东省四会县清塘镇独岗管理区高墩寨村。
谭勇先生青年时期酷爱美术,活跃于画坛,曾参加岭南画派高奇峰门下人物画家黄少强创立的“民间画会”。抗日战争期间,创作了不少反映抗日救亡的作品。1938年入国立中央大学(即现南京大学)艺术系深造,受业于徐悲鸿先生,成为他的高足,当过徐先生的助手,并得到张书旂、黄君壁诸大师的指导。1942年获学士学位,毕业后留校任教。
五十年代起,谭勇先生曾长期担任国画教研室主任,为逐步形成国画教学的师范特色和建立系统完整的教学体系,作出了不懈的努力。先生多年来致力于花鸟画的探索,继承了中国花鸟画宋元以来的优良传统,其画造型精巧,笔墨秀润,意趣清新,具有独特的个人风格。他开设人物、山水、花鸟三门课程,尤以花鸟画教学更为突出。对谭先生艺术特色影响最大的要算岭南画派画风徐悲鸿先生。岭南画派在我国绘画史上占有很重要的地位,它的兴起,大致推算到南宋时的牧溪,以后各代均有人才辈出,各领风骚,尤其近代高剑父高奇峰陈树人关山月黎雄才等,他们的特点是既吸收西方艺术长处,面向自然,注重写生,又融古参今,不失传统,从而达到学古而不泥古。
徐悲鸿先生是中西结合得很好的美术大师和卓越的美术教育家。对于中国传统绘画的改良和创新,是有很大功劳的。他早年留学法国,对西画有深刻的钻研和坚实的功力,回国后,立志提倡国画改良,为中国画开辟新径。徐先生提倡“古法之佳者守之,垂绝者继之,不佳者改之,未足者增之,西方绘画可乘入者融之”。他这一理论对谭先生影响颇大,谭先生认为,徐先生这一理论,既要保留传统中国画的东西,又要吸收外来绘画的精华,为我所用。不能全盘否定中国画,搞“全盘西化”,否则,就不叫“中国画”了。所以他的画既有中国气派,又有新意,力求做到“融”西洋之法,有准确的造型能力和扎实的素描功夫,讲究结构、比例、透视、明暗、富有真实感,但又十分讲究中国画的用笔用墨,以形写神;既保持和发扬了岭南派画风,又形成了具有自己鲜明个性的绘画特色。
谭先生坚持“外师造化,中得心源”的创作原则,本着“形神兼备,雅俗共赏,群众喜爱,专家认可”的创作愿望,从实际出发,弘扬祖国传统文化艺术。他不顾年事已高,经常深入城乡,漫游大江南北,其足迹踏遍黄山、华岳、峨嵋、青城、雁荡、鼎湖、桂林、三峡等名山大川;他朝夕沉浸在禽园花圃之中,悉心观察、写生,积累了极为丰富的创作素材。
谭先生十分重视绘画内容,以内容和技法的完美统一为创作的最高境界。在发扬国画魅力的同时,更直接更具体的作用就在于内容,先生笔下的人物,山水、花鸟,都洋溢着时代的气息、清新、活泼、令人振奋,催人向上。在传统与创新问题上,主张创新必须以继承传统为基础,对于那些断源截流、抛弃传统的“标新立异”的所谓“现代艺术”,他是反对的。“师古不泥方得古,创新有本始为新”,认为“国画的创新是肯定的。前人,今人都在不断努力,但创新要有一个过程,发展国画艺术。当务之急是一手抓传统学习与继承,一手抓绘画艺术风格的多样化,在继承传统的基础上推陈出新”。
谭先生精花鸟,兼长山水,人物,早在四十年代,他的巨幅人物画《木工》,便以传统国画技法为基础进行创新,深受好评而获奖,五十年代,他的山水画热情歌颂祖国的壮丽河山和建设风貌,长卷《佛子岭水库》在全国展出后,为中国美术馆收藏;《水库工地》获江苏省十年创作优秀奖,并为江苏省美术馆所收藏。他的花鸟画富于新意,许多作品参加全国、江苏省美展或选送国外展出。留居香港的著名花鸟画家赵少昂先生1985年看了谭先生的作品后,称赞他“功力甚深”,“所作已臻妙境”。南京艺术学院陈大羽教授认为谭先生的花鸟画“秀润而不甜,鲜艳而不俗”。1945年徐悲鸿先生抱病为他的画展撰写序言,赞誉他“能从生活中撷取新材,予中国绘画的新面目”,并书写条幅送谭先生:“写人物不墨守陈法,所造多凄婉曼妙,前途未可量。以资嘉励。徐先生夫人廖静文在《徐悲鸿一生》一书中写道:“青年教师艾中信先生,曾宪七先生,谭勇先生,都是富有才华,勤于创作的后起之秀”。这些,对谭先生一生有很大的鼓励、鞭策和影响。他以徐先生为楷模,以画家兼美术教育家为己任。决心当一个既从事创作的画家,又担当传经育人的美术教师。
谭先生讲课力求由浅入深,深入浅出,举一反三,常常挥毫示范。学生反映,听先生讲画史,不乏味又易记。他认为,我国花鸟画有悠久的历史,学习绘画,光埋头画还不够,还应当了解绘画的发展史,借以作为今天的借鉴。他说:“花鸟画在历史上犹如滔舀长流,经历了各个朝代,汇集了许多大江小河,其间或波澜壮阔,或静寂无波,然而,总是川流不息。时至当今社会主义的伟大时代,为了祖国文化艺术的发扬光大,面对这条河川,当如何加工浚拓,促使它愈加气势磅礴,这是我们的任务。”他还指出,有些年轻人,受资产阶级自由化影响,排斥民族传统文化和现实主义艺术,照搬西方现代派,以追求“形式”为创新,主张表现自我,强调主体意识,脱离政治和生活,强调变形和抽象化,要求表现人性、灵性以及焦灼、苦闷、冲动、空虚、孤独等,甚至重提“为艺术而艺术”,这就脱离了我们的传统,脱离了现实,脱离了社会主义主旋律,是错误的,没有前途的。谭先生为继承和发展民族传统做了很多极其有益的工作,他主张“一方面要吸取世界艺术的精华,融入我们民族艺术之中;另方面,要继承传统艺术的独特风格,又要发展之、丰富之”。“中西艺术并不完全矛盾和互不相融,相互之间的吸收借鉴,意义很大”。他举例说:“马蒂斯毕加索是西方现代派的代表人物,但他们自己都说是受了中国画的影响而改变风格的”谭先生所谓“融汇中西”,并非趋时诓世之言,他曾摸索过油画,进行过各种艺术风格的探索,他表示自己还要不断探新,以求画境更臻高妙。
谭先生积几十年之经验,认为学中国画有三个阶段,就是临摹—写生—创作,艺术贵在创造,临摹与写生的目的在于创作。
谭先生在艺术教学上,努力把自己和前人积累下来的,行兹有效的经验传授给学生,实行传统、生活(写生)、创作三位一体,写生是从传统通往创作的桥梁,是关键。他提倡的写生既不同于西方学院派,又不同于古代的“目识心记”,而是把写生当作培养学生对现实的感情,消化传统知识,训练创造性思维等能力的过程。
杏坛传道五十年,谭先生除了担任国画专业班教学外,还担任过美籍、澳大利亚籍华裔留学生专修中国画的指导老师。近年来,他还为中学师资的培训贡.献余力。经他指导过的何鸣(师竹)现在已成为闻名海外的中年画家。不久前,师竹在香港美术社协会举办了个人画展,在美术界引起较大轰动。1983年,谭先生荣获优秀教学奖。
谭先生在繁忙的创作和理论研究的同时,还从事绘画艺术硕士研究生的教学,可谓“一片冰心在玉壶,满园桃李满园春”。
谭先生主要论文和著作有:《花鸟画教学》、《光辉灿烂的艺术——莫高窟》、《谭良画选》等,他的《花鸟画法》一书已由上海人民美术出版社出版。他主讲的5集共6个小时的《写意花鸟画技法》录像带已由有关部门录制完成,受到专家、教授好评。
宝刀未老,奋斗不息。谭先生虽已年逾古稀,但身体很健朗,精神奕奕。他经常接待学者、教授、外宾,即席挥毫,探讨技艺,为增进国际文化交流作出贡献。1988年9月19日上午,由国会主席兼上院议长,乌吉蒙空纳温率领的泰国国会代表团,到南京师范大学美术系参观时,先生应客人要求,当场作画,并把这幅题名为《和平万岁》的国画赠给乌吉主席,乌吉主席说:“画里这两只和平鸽,象征着泰中两国都在为世界和平事业作不懈的努力。”
谭先生应西德汉堡德中友好协会的邀请,赴西德进行艺术交流和访问讲学,历时5个多月,在西德汉堡市中心区画廊、汉堡外语学院和吕贝克市,塞尔市,不伦内克市等地展出他50多幅画作,吸引了不少西德艺术家、名流、学者以及各界人士。展览期间,还即席挥毫作画,现身说法,介绍中国绘画艺术以及他自己的作画技法、经验,使西德朋友一睹中国绘画之风采。在讲学期间,曾遍览西德南部名城,畅览莱茵河畔旖旎风光,参观各大美术馆,博物馆、著名的建筑和雕塑,访问西德画家友人,切磋画艺,并介绍中国绘画历史和现状。悉心体味西方艺术精华,晤汇中西艺境。他认为,在国外讲学和举办画展,向世界宣传、介绍中国绘画,让各国人民了解中国的民族艺术,增进中国与世界各国人民的友谊,这一工作意义深远。对中国画很有研究的汉堡大学教育学院教授克拉罗彼特博士听了先生的介绍后,深情地说:“我看过好几部介绍中国绘画艺术的电视片,可都没有亲聆到你的讲学这样具体深刻,我感到得益很大,谢谢你。”西德不少报刊配以大幅照片,报道了谭先生讲学和画展情况,称赞画展使西德朋友得以一睹中国传统绘画的风采,他的讲学是介绍中国绘画艺术最生动,最具影响的一次活动。一位上了年纪的西德老太太观赏完画展后,特意上前向谭先生告别说:“祝贺你的展览成功,感谢你为我们带来了这精美的东方艺术。”??
