黄素宁，女1950年生于山东烟台。画家。中国美术家协会会员。先后毕业于南京艺术学院国画系，中央美术学院年画、连环画研究生班。曾任职于西藏美协、江苏省国画院。曾于1988年移居美国纽约。陈丹青妻子。黄素宁兼事纺织品设计，曾担任中国纺织面料及花样设计大赛评委。
1976年，黄素宁在南京艺术学院国画系毕业，主动要求去西藏工作。黄素宁认为，这并不是赶时髦。为什么都要集中在繁华的大城市呢？历届全国美展，总没有西藏的作品，可以使自己得到更好的发挥。
黄素宁多次参加大展，主要作品有：中国画《青藏线上传喜讯》《援军路上》；油画《进军西藏》（与陈丹青合作）等。

1977年6月，当时在西藏工作的黄素宁，准备与丹青合作一幅题为《进军西藏》的油画，因为这是一幅工程量很大的作品，并且赶制参加将要举办的纪念建军五十周年美展。半年前，陈丹青第一次进藏，被请去创作并辅导当地业余画家，推荐他和另外两位南京艺术学院老师的人，就是黄素宁。此时，陈丹青作为知青，在南京北郊的一个文化馆工作。黄素宁带着已经搜集好的大量生动的文字和形象资料，带着她日臻成熟的创作构思来了。她来得也正是时候，陈丹青被借调在江苏人民出版社创作宣传画，正好借这个机会来合作这幅画。
艰苦卓绝
可是画布和油画颜料还没有着落，陈丹青找到省美展办公室，好说歹说，才求得六块人家裁下来的画布边角料。黄素宁把六块边角料缝缀起来，拼成了一幅三米宽的画布，陈丹青绷在了自己钉的木框上。画布有了，他又四处去讨要颜料和画笔，黄素宁又从朋友那里临时借了一间小屋。尽管条件很差，但他俩还是乐观的。
