慕凌飞，汉族，名倩，字凌飞，别名慕泉淙，以字行，别署虎翁，斋名云起楼。生于山东黄县，早年毕业于上海民治学校。十六岁时在上海拜张善孖、张大千为师，为大风堂入室弟子，居师府四年，得亲授，饱览大风堂藏品，临习历代名家真迹。曾随两师到黄山、雁荡等地。擅山水、人物、花鸟、走兽、敦煌佛释等，笔墨细腻清润，讲究法度，追求意境。山水以金碧、泼墨泼彩见长，尤擅画虎，所作形神兼备，气势动人。慕凌飞先生为实现张善孖先生的心愿，不负大千先生的嘱托，历时三十余载，于1982年匠心独运地完成了中国画坛第一幅《百虎图》长卷，轰动了海内外，被誉为中国画艺苑中的一枝奇葩，中国的国宝。是中国美术家协会会员，中国书法家协会天津分会会员，重庆诗书画学院顾问，天津市文史研究馆馆员。中央电视台曾以“慕凌飞的绘画艺术”为题，介绍其艺术事迹。有的作品多次在国内外展出并在报刊上发表，曾先后在北京、上海、天津、山东等地举办个人画展二十余次。
1987年应邀为全国政协大会堂制丈二巨幅《雄风盖世图》　1989年三月在中国美术馆办“慕凌飞书画展”。代表作品有《蜀山双雄图》（为纪念张大千逝世而作）、《画虎图》、《引滦入津、造福万代》、《黄山云海》、《岱宗旭日》、《纨扇仕女图》、《荷花》、《古木寒泉》、《山村隐居》、《群雄图》等。著有《山水画技法》、《张善子与张大千》等。亦工书法，得力于《石门铭》、《瘗鹤铭》等。
慕凌飞先生现安葬于天津元宝山庄生命纪念公园。
