江苏无锡市前洲镇人。1924年2月生。家贫困，幼年失学，在家种地，小学、中学均未能毕业。抗战胜利后考入苏州美专，两个月后又因贫失学。1946年考入无锡国专，1948年毕业。1954年调入北京中国人民大学，任讲师、副教授、教授等职。1975年国务院文化组成立红楼梦校订组，冯其庸任副组长，主管校注业务，前后7年，1982年出书。1986年调任中国艺术研究院副院长，1996年11月离休。2005年又受聘为中国人民大学国学院首任院长，两年后退职。2009年再任中国文字博物馆首任馆长。
冯其庸自小酷爱书画，初得无锡老画家诸健秋指教，在无锡国专时受书法于王蘧常，后又与刘海粟、朱屺瞻、谢稚柳、唐云、启功、徐邦达、杨仁恺、周怀民、许麐庐诸先生游，于书画潜心学习，后更参历代名家作品，多所心悟。近年潜心于山水画，师法宋元。作者曾十上新疆，三登帕米尔高原最高处，两越塔克拉玛干大沙漠。2005年9月，83岁的冯其庸又穿越罗布泊至楼兰、龙城、白龙堆、三陇沙入玉门关至敦煌。冯其庸数十年来历览天下奇山异水。除师传统外，更师造化，故其画多新意。作者书法师二王，并长于诗词，曾受诗法于钱仲联。王蘧常，更精于学术文章（上图为主人公2005年10月摄于白龙堆）。著作等身，已出《瓜饭楼丛稿》35卷，《脂砚斋重评石头记彙校彙评》30卷（与友人合作）共60多册。作者数十年来以学术著称，书画是其余事，但其书画都臻高处，自呈面目。在北京、上海等地举行过大型展览会，得到学界的极高评价。
