山东省潍坊市人。现任中央美术学院教授、博士生导师、中国美术家协会理事、中国画艺术委员会主任、全国政协第八、九届委员。
其作品融深厚的传统功力学养和现代审美情趣为一体，在内容与形式两方面都有新探索，形成了自己的风格。在花鸟画理论上画家见解独特，相继提出“大花鸟精神”、“你的野草是我的花园”、“重彩写意”、“技法重组”等主张。
在国内、台湾及美国、法国、日本、加拿大、肯尼亚等地多次举办个人画展。曾应邀在加拿大、日本等国及香港地区讲学，进行学术交流，曾获“文化部优秀美术作品奖”、“中日水墨画特别优秀奖”等。
出版有《中国近现代名家画集——郭怡孮》等多部画集。编著有《中国画教材》、《郭味蕖花鸟画技法》、《白描花卉写生》、《中国画花卉技法》、《花卉写生教程》、《花鸟画创作教学》等，并有多部教学录像带、光盘发行。
