生于天津，祖籍山东蓬莱，曾受著名画家陈缘督启蒙，研习绘画。后进入解放区晋冀热辽联合大学历史系学习，1949年加入辽宁省文工团，担任美术创作员，1950年起，任《辽西文艺》美编，后调入东北画报社（辽宁美术出版社的前身）担任连环画创作员、美编、编审。在60多年的艺术创作，特别是连环画创作中，形成了以重视典型人物的塑造，构图严谨准确，人物生动传神的风格。
《十五贯》堪称王弘力连环画的代表作，故事是根据同名昆曲改编绘画的。虽然，整部连环画作品只有54幅图，但惜笔如金的大师，却成功地塑造了况钟、尤葫芦父女、娄阿鼠、过于执等众多人物，大师以近连环画一半的篇幅来重点塑造清官况钟这位主要人物，而其他人物的塑造和描绘也都各具特色，生动传神。《十五贯》能从几百部评奖作品中脱颖而出，斩获头奖，是王弘力对连环画艺术长期探索、努力和不懈追求的最好证明和褒奖。
王弘力除《十五贯》外，还创作了许多连环画，深受读者的喜爱和欢迎，如：神话故事《天仙配》、“聊斋故事”连环画《王者》、《崂山道士》、《梦狼》等，大师尤其擅长《聊斋》题材连环画的创作，他的笔墨总是能置身于清代背景中，体现原作的用心和蒲氏的风格。
因此，当天津人民美术出版社，于上世纪80年代出版60册一套的系列连环画《聊斋志异》时，诚邀王弘力绘画了《青梅》，这是大师阔别家乡数十年后，为家乡所作出的贡献；王弘力同期为人民美术出版社创作了《水浒传》套书之《杨志卖刀》，为此部连环画增色。
王弘力是一位为人谦和、勤于钻研的学者型画家，与他接触过的同事、朋友无不为大师的博学多才所折服，大师在创作之余甚至在下放的岁月里，对历史、文物、服饰、少数民族文字及地方民俗都有建树，且有多部专著出版。
王弘力先生为中国美术家协会会员、中国民族古文字研究会会员、沈阳市文史馆馆员。
《天仙配》、《十五贯》获第二届全国连环画创作一等奖；出版有《美的瞬间》等。
建国十年大庆时为中国历史博物馆创作大型历史画《牧野之战》。
国画作品《十六大阿罗汉》、《饮中八仙歌》等已被新加坡、日本、美国等国友人收藏。
