杨善深

 杨善深,男,汉族,广东台山人,1913年出生广东赤溪。12岁开始临摹古画,17岁移居香港,二十岁始从事国画创作,二十一岁在广州首次举办个人画展,二十二岁留学日本东京都堂本美术学校,二十五岁回国,1940年赴南洋举办个人画展,在新加坡邂逅徐悲鸿合作绘画多帧。同年作品入选在苏联举办的"中国美术展览会",并任中国文化协进会会员。

 杨善深(1913年10月26日--2004年5月15日),字柳斋,广东省台山县赤溪镇客家人。他自幼酷爱绘画,12岁开始临摹古画。1930年,他移居香港。1933年,20岁的他开始从事绘画。1935年留学日本,在京都堂本美术专科学校攻读美术,1938年回国,于香港兴办第一次个展。1940年赴新加坡、南洋举办画展。1941年与高剑父、冯康侯等人在澳门成立"协社"。1945年与高剑父陈树人赵少昂关山月、黎葛民五人在广州成立"今社"。1949年定居香港。1958年于美国纽约、三藩市、檀香山等地举办个展。1970年于香港成立春风画会,传授画艺,并于同年获台湾学术研究所颁赠哲士衔。1971年,游历世界十多个国家,1972年始,多次回大陆于名山胜水写生作画。1983年于日本东京、大阪举办个展。现居加拿大。擅长中国画。兼长山水、花鸟、人物。作品有《秋山旅行》、《十二生肖》、《人物册页》等。出版有《杨善深画集》多种。

 

1941年移居澳门,与高剑父、冯康侯等人成立"协社",举办义展,为难童筹款。1945年与高剑父陈树人赵少昂关山月、黎葛民等人创办"今社画会",同年在广东石岐市举办个人画展。1947年与赵少昂举办合作画展,1948年应广东省立民众教育之邀,与高剑父、陈树人赵少昂关山月、黎葛民一起,在中山图书馆举办六人作品联展。1955年在新加坡举办个人画展,1959年先后在美国纽约、三藩市、檀香山及加拿大温哥华等地举办个人画展,1973年起又先后在新加坡、香港、日本东京、大阪等地举办个人画展,1983年与赵少昂、关山月黎雄才一起举办四人合作画展,1984年与关月山一起应邀访问美国,并在德州大学、纽约城市大学、哈佛大学、加州柏克莱大学讲学。出版画册多种。创作中西兼取,注重写生,在继承"岭南画派"优良传统的基础上另辟途径,形成了鲜明的个人风格,成为当代"岭南画派"主要代表画家。作品构思新颖,笔墨凝练,巧拙互用,雄放而不失秀雅,以花鸟、走兽见长,人物亦自具特色。

 

1999年,杨善深获香港艺术发展局颁发视艺成就奖。2000年,广州艺术博物院杨善深艺术馆落成开幕,广州市政府颁授杨善深"广州市荣誉市民"称号。2001年,杨善深创作巨幅老松《万古常青》赠予人民大会堂。

 

2004年5月15日,岭南画派大师杨善深在香港半山宝珊道寓所去世,享年91岁。

 

作品有《秋山旅行》、《十二生肖》、《人物册页》等 。 出版有《杨善深画集》多种 。

大事记

 1913 广东台山人,生于广东省赤溪县(今台山市赤溪镇)象岭村。 1930年移居香港。

 

1933年开始从事绘画。结识高剑父并展开悠久的师友关系。

 

1934年作品首次在广州青年会展出。

 

1935年留学日本,入京都堂本美术专科学校,随堂本印象学画。

 

1938年回港,在石塘嘴金陵酒家举行个展。高剑父和许地山前往参观,并加鼓励。

 

1940年赴新加坡、南洋各地举行画展。与徐悲鸿邂逅于新加坡,并合作写画多帧。在香港举行赈灾义展,参加苏联举办的中国美术展览会及加入由简又文发起的中国文化协进会。

 

1941年香港沦陷,避居澳门。与高剑父、冯康侯等成立协社画会。同年协社在澳门市政厅举行书画义展,为苦难儿童筹款。周日常与高剑父关山月、司徒奇等出外写生。

 

1945年回港定居。与高剑父、陈树人赵少昂关山月及黎葛民在广 州成立今社画会。于中山县石歧市举行个展。又在新昌、台山等地举行赵少昂杨善深联合画展。

 

1947年在香港中区新英明影楼与赵少昂举行玫瑰画展,继与邓芬赵少昂举办扇面作品展。

 

1948年应广东省立民众教育馆邀请,与陈树人、高剑父、赵少昂、关山月、黎葛民在广州中山图书馆举行联展,后再转至香港圣约翰教堂展出。1950年与高剑父、赵少昂在纽约中华会馆举行联展。

 

1955年在新加坡举行个展;《杨善深画集》于新加坡出版。

 

1959年在纽约华埠中华总商会举行个展;在旧金山中华总商会举行个展;在檀香山中华总商会举行个展;在加拿大温哥华举行个展。

 

1970年与冯康侯、陈荆鸿、赵少昂在香港大会堂举行联展;成立春风画会;获台湾中华学术研究会所颁赠哲士衔。

 

1971年在台湾历史博物馆举行个展。旅游印度、巴基斯坦、伊朗、意大利、瑞士、奥地利、匈牙利、卢森堡、比利时、荷兰、丹麦、英国、美国、加拿大、澳洲、韩国、墨西哥、法国及德国。 1972年到内地旅游,曾至山东、北京、苏州、杭州、延安及甘肃等地写生。《杨善深画集第二辑》在香港出版。

 

1973年在新加坡中华会馆举行个展。

1979年到内地旅游,至黄山、泰山、曲阜、扬州、济南、青岛、沈阳及长春等地写生。

 

1980年再到内地旅游,至成都、白帝城、青城山、灌县、兰州、炳灵寺、酒泉、敦煌、玉门关、阳关、三峡、昆明、云冈及雁门关等地写生。

 

1981年再到内地旅游,至雁门关、五台山、恒山、敦煌、玉门关及炳灵寺等地写生。1981年秋与赵少昂、关山月黎雄才四小杰相聚并合作作品,关山月戏仿三人落写名款,在岭南画坛留下佳话,市政府香港艺术馆举办其个展,并出版《杨善深的艺术》;参加"第一届全国书法篆刻展览"。

 

1982年再赴内地旅游,至湘西青岩山等地写生;于台北市立美术馆举行个展。1983年香港大学冯平山博物馆主办岭南四家(赵少昂、关山月、黎雄才、杨善深)画展,并出版目录;被香港市政局委任为"当代香港艺术双年展"评审委员;在日本大阪西武百货公司举行个展,并出版《杨善深展》目录。《杨善深写生集第一辑》在香港出版。

 

1984年香港大业公司出版《杨善深画集》。

 

1985年日本西武百货公司出版《杨善深写生展》。

 

1986年参加于香港大会堂举行,由香港中文大学主办的"当代中国画展";台湾艺术图书公司出版《杨善深画集》。

1989年游埃及、约旦和希腊;在新加坡国家博物院画廊举行个展,并出版《杨善深画集》;后移至台北翰雅轩展出。 1990年《荣宝斋画谱--杨善深绘花鸟动物山水部分》于北京出版;游内地及苏联。

 

1991年游美国;台北甄雅堂、东联艺术中心及高雄春秋艺术中心联合主办其作品展。台湾甄雅堂出版《杨善深作品精选集》;到台湾写生;书法《杜工部诗》被收刻于湖北荆州碑林中。

 

1993年应台北市立美术馆之邀请,举行书画个展,并出版《杨善深书画展目录》;《幽居集--杨善深作品展》于台湾出版;游南美。

 

1994年作品为台北故宫博物院收藏,约80余帧;12月赴湖北写生。

 

1995年3月,香港艺术馆主办"杨善深艺术回顾展",出版画册《岭南风范》;8月,游美国黄石公园;10月,赴北京旅游写生;11月,赴福建写生。

 

1996年4月,赴广东罗浮山写生,并返家乡赤溪探亲;5月,赴湖北武当山、神农驾写生;8月,赴南美、古巴旅游写生;10月,赴南美及津巴布韦旅游写生,至好望角、维多利亚大瀑布;12月,赴台湾环岛旅游写生。

 

1997年为《香港回归纪念册》绘制香港市花--紫荆花;赴粤北韶关、南华寺、珠玑巷写生。

 

1998年2月,香港陈蔼华出版《杨善深画集》;3月,澳门市政厅主办"杨善深画展",并出版画集;6月,赴广东中山水乡写生;8月,赴清远、北江写生。

 

1999年获香港艺术发展局颁发视觉艺术终身成就奖赴广东花都市旅游写生;赴马来西亚旅游写生;赴台湾旅游。

 

2000年5月,游广东清远、英德、四会、肇庆、番禺、中山、珠海;7月,获香港特别行政区颁授银紫荆星章;9月,游广西,广州艺术博物院杨善深艺术馆落成;10月,获广州市政府颁授"广州市荣誉市民",赴杭州、莫干山写生;赴广东三水写生,于三水过87岁生日。

 

2001年3月,赴广东阳江、阳春、新会、江门、顺德、中山、珠海旅游写生;5月,赴柬埔寨吴哥窑写生;创作百花卷,二十尺巨幅松树及一丈巨联多幅。

 

2002年1月,中山举行"笔底春风"杨善深九十近作大展,并出版"笔底春风"-杨善深艺术天地。

 

2004年5月15日,杨善深因心脏病发,不幸于香港逝世,终年91岁。

艺术大展

 "杨善深艺术大展"将于2007年12月18日在广州艺术博物院举行开幕式。届时还举行了《杨善深画册》、《杨善深传记》首发式。此次展览得力于杨善深先生众多的门人弟子以及海内外收藏家的共同协助,展出了杨善深各个时期的代表性精品共200多件。

 

杨善深擅画花鸟、走兽、人物、山水,书法也独具特色。他秉承岭南画派的创新精神,融贯中外,其绘画构思新颖,笔墨苍老,巧拙互用,雄放而不失秀雅,形成了鲜明的个人风格。杨善深以动物画最具特色(为了论述方便,本文把杨善深关于家畜、飞禽、两栖类、鱼介、昆虫等作品归类到"动物画")。对动物的描绘,贯穿了杨善深的一生,这也是发扬了岭南画派热衷描绘动物的优良传统。近现代画坛上擅画动物的画家不少,著名的有以画马闻名的徐悲鸿,以画狮著称的高奇峰何香凝,善于画虎的冯大中张善子,以画牛出名的李可染,擅长画驴的黄胄,画兔高手刘继卣,画猫名家曹克家等。然而,当代动物画坛中,像杨善深这般画过如此多动物的画家寥寥无几,他的动物画,题材极其广泛,从翎毛到走兽,从游鱼到草虫,从大动物到小动物,门类齐全,画过的动物有:鸡、鸭、鹅、猫、狗、猪、马、牛、兔、猴、羊、虎、狮、豹、鹰、蛇、鱼、鼠、鸦、鹤、鹧鸪、蜻蜒、蚱蜢、蟋蟀、八哥、飞雀、燕子、白鹭、青蛙等。杨善深如此喜爱描绘动物,除了个人的喜好、高剑父的熏陶因素外,应该说与他的留日学习经历有很大的关系。杨善深留学日本两年,随堂本印象学画,堂本印象属于竹内栖凤一派,竹内栖凤以画飞禽走兽著名,他的画作既有中国绘画的意趣与工笔画的细腻和谐,又大量融入了西画的表现技法。日本国内很多推崇竹内栖凤的绘画,杨善深毋庸质疑受其影响。

 

在日期间,他经常去京都动物园写生,《长尾雉鸡》 、《白雉鸡》即为京都动物园的写生作品。同时,20世纪初,日本出版了各种动物册,包括科学方面的、美术方面的,如《东洋博物标本》。动物画家的"灵妙活物"印本,大量来到中国,对中国的画坛带来了一股清新之风。日本画家对生物世界的关注热情激发了当时包括杨善深在内的中国画家对动植物描绘的兴趣,这也应该是他致力于描绘动物的一个诱因。香港中文大学荣誉教授饶宗颐高度评价了杨善深的动物画:"善深先生肯定是当代的绘画大师,而他所写的走兽禽鸟,不单在今日可称独步,即使古人之中,亦难数出几个有这样的造诣"的确,杨善深艺术视野开阔,突破传统中国动物画在题材上的狭窄,描绘前人不曾入画的动物,在中国花鸟画领域中拓展出广阔的表现空间,对岭南画派动物画的发展具有重要的现实意义和深远的历史影响。为了回顾杨善深的艺术历程,展示其独特的艺术风采,在这次"杨善深艺术大展"中,既有气格雄浑的山水、人物、走兽,也有墨彩纷华的花鸟虫鱼,乃至趣味盎然的书法;从条幅到手卷,从斗方到册页,乃至写生画稿等,题材丰富,形式多样,力求全面反映杨善深的艺术成就,彰显其在当代中国画坛的影响力。我们期望通过对杨善深创作技巧和作品内涵的深入探讨,为岭南艺术进入新的时代提供可资借鉴的经验,进一步弘扬岭南艺术,推动岭南艺术的全面发展。

English Introduction

 Yang Shanshen (October 26, 1913 - May 15, 2004), Ziliuzhai, Hakka in Chixi Town, Taishan County, Guangdong Province. He loved painting since childhood and began copying ancient paintings at the age of 12. In 1930, he moved to Hong Kong. In 1933, at the age of 20, he began painting. In 1935, he studied in Japan, studied fine arts in Kyoto Tongben Academy of Fine Arts, returned to China in 1938, and held his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. In 1940, he went to Singapore and Nanyang to hold art exhibitions. In 1941, Gao Jianfu, Feng Kanghou and others established the Association in Macao. In 1945, Gao Jianfu, Chen Shuren, Zhao Shao'ang, Guan Shanyue and Li Gemin founded the "Today Society" in Guangzhou. He settled in Hong Kong in 1949. In 1958, he held solo exhibitions in New York, San Francisco and Honolulu. In 1970, Chunfeng Painting Association was established in Hong Kong to teach painting and was awarded the title of Philosopher by Taiwan Academic Research Institute in the same year. In 1971, he traveled to more than ten countries in the world. Since 1972, he has returned to the mainland for many times to draw pictures of famous mountains and rivers. In 1983, a solo exhibition was held in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. Now living in Canada. Good at Chinese painting. Chang Landscape, Flowers and Birds, Characters. In 1941, he emigrated to Macau and founded a "association" with Gao Jianfu and Feng Kanghou to hold a charity exhibition to raise money for children in need. In 1945, Gao Jianfu, Chen Shuren, Zhao Shao'ang, Guan Shanyue and Li Gemin founded the "Today Society Painting Fair" and held a personal exhibition in Shiqi City, Guangdong Province in the same year. In 1947, he held a cooperative painting exhibition with Zhao Shao'ang. In 1948, at the invitation of Guangdong Provincial People's Education, he held a joint exhibition with Gao Jianfu, Chen Shuren, Zhao Shao'ang, Guan Shanyue and Li Gemin in Zhongshan Library. In 1955, a personal painting exhibition was held in Singapore, in 1959 in New York, San Francisco, Honolulu and Vancouver, Canada. Since 1973, a personal painting exhibition has been held in Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Osaka and other places. In 1983, a four-person cooperation was held with Zhao Shao-ang, Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai. In 1984, he was invited to visit the United States with Guan Yueshan and lectured at Texas University, City University of New York, Harvard University and Berkeley University of California. On May 15, 2004, Lingnan Painting Master Yang Shanshen died at the Baoshan Road apartment in Banshan, Hong Kong. He was 91 years old.

Taishan, Guangdong Province, 1913. Born in Xiangling Village, Chixi County, Guangdong Province (Chixi Town, present-day Taishan City). He moved to Hong Kong in 1930.

He began painting in 1933. Get to know Father Gao Jianfu and develop a long relationship between teachers and friends.

The works were first exhibited in Guangzhou Youth Association in 1934.

In 1935, he studied in Japan and went to the Kyoto Tongben Academy of Fine Arts. He studied impression painting in his class.

Returning to Hong Kong in 1938, a solo exhibition was held at Jinling Restaurant in Shitangzui. Gao Jianfu and Xudishan visited and encouraged him.

In 1940, he went to Singapore and Nanyang to hold art exhibitions. I met Xu Beihong in Singapore and worked with him on multi-frame painting. Held a disaster relief exhibition in Hong Kong, participated in the Chinese Art Exhibition held by the Soviet Union and joined the Chinese Cultural Association sponsored by Jane Youwen.

In 1941, Hong Kong was occupied and lived in Macao. Gao Jianfu and Feng Kanghou set up associations. In the same year, the Association held a free exhibition of calligraphy and painting at the Macau City Hall to raise funds for children in distress. On Sundays, Gao Jianfu, Guan Shanyue and Stuqi often go out to sketch.

He returned to Hong Kong in 1945 to settle down. Gao Jianfu, Chen Shuren, Zhao Shao'ang, Guan Shanyue and Li Gemin set up the Today Society in Guangzhou. A solo exhibition was held in Shiqi City, Zhongshan County. Joint exhibitions of Zhao Shao'ang and Yang Shanshen were also held in Xinchang and Taishan.

In 1947, Rose Painting Exhibition was held with Zhao Shao-ang in Xinying Ming Film House, Central District of Hong Kong, followed by Fan Works Exhibition with Deng Fen and Zhao Shao-ang.

In 1948, at the invitation of Guangdong Provincial People's Education Museum, a joint exhibition was held with Chen Shuren, Gao Jianfu, Zhao Shao-ang, Guan Shanyue and Li Gemin at Zhongshan Library in Guangzhou, and then transferred to St. John's Church in Hong Kong. In 1950, Gao Jianfu and Zhao Shao-ang held a joint exhibition at the Chinese Convention Hall in New York.

In 1955, a solo exhibition was held in Singapore; The Collection of Yang Shanshen's Paintings was published in Singapore.

In 1959, a solo exhibition was held in Chinatown, New York; in San Francisco; in Honolululu; and in Vancouver, Canada.

In 1970, he held a joint exhibition with Feng Kanghou, Chen Jinghong and Zhao Shao-ang in the Hong Kong General Hall. He established the Spring Style Painting Fair and was awarded the title of philosopher by Taiwan Chinese Academic Research Institute.

In 1971, a solo exhibition was held at the Taiwan Museum of History. Travel to India, Pakistan, Iran, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Mexico, France and Germany. In 1972, he traveled to the mainland and sketched in Shandong, Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Yan'an and Gansu. The second volume of Yang Shanshen's Painting Collection was published in Hong Kong.

In 1973, a solo exhibition was held at the China Pavilion in Singapore.

In 1978, a solo exhibition was held at the Hong Kong Art Centre.

In 1979, he traveled to the mainland and sketched in Huangshan, Taishan, Qufu, Yangzhou, Jinan, Qingdao, Shenyang and Changchun.

In 1980, he traveled to the mainland and sketched in Chengdu, Baidicheng, Qingchengshan, Guanxian, Lanzhou, Bingling Temple, Jiuquan, Dunhuang, Yumenguan, Yangguan, Three Gorges, Kunming, Yungang and Yanmenguan.

In 1981, he traveled to the mainland and sketched in Yanmenguan, Wutaishan, Hengshan, Dunhuang, Yumenguan and Bingling Temple. In the autumn of 1981, he gathered with Zhao Shao-ang, Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai to work together. Guan Shanyue parodied three people to write famous works and left a good story in Lingnan painting circle. The Hong Kong Municipal Municipal Municipal Museum of Art held its solo exhibition and published Yang Shanshen's Art. He participated in the First National Calligraphy Seal Carving Exhibition.

In 1982, he traveled to the mainland and sketched in Qingyan Mountain, western Hunan. He held a solo exhibition in Taipei Municipal Art Museum. In 1983, the Fung Ping Shan Museum of the University of Hong Kong sponsored four paintings exhibitions in Lingnan (Zhao Shao-ang, Guan Shanyue, Li Xiongcai and Yang Shanshen) and published catalogues. It was appointed by the Hong Kong Municipal Council as the jury member of the "Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennale". It held a solo exhibition at the Saiwu Department Store in Osaka, Japan, and published the catalogue of "Yang Shanshen Exhibition". The first volume of Yang Shanshen's Sketchbook was published in Hong Kong.

In 1984, Hong Kong Daye Company published Yang Shanshen's Paintings.

In 1985, Japan Xiwu Department Store Company published "Yang Shanshen Sketch Exhibition".

In 1986, he participated in the "Contemporary Chinese Painting Exhibition" held in the Hong Kong General Hall and sponsored by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Taiwanese Art Book Company published "Yang Shanshen Painting Collection".

In 1987, he participated in the Tour Exhibition of "Oriental Ink Painting Exhibition". Hong Kong Daye Company published "Yang Shanshen's Works Collection". Migrated to Vancouver, Canada, in 1988.

In 1989, he visited Egypt, Jordan and Greece, held solo exhibitions in the Gallery of the National Museum of Singapore, and published the Collection of Yang Shanshen's Paintings, and later moved to Hanyahuan, Taipei for exhibition. In 1990, Rong Baozhai Painting Spectrum - Yang Shanshen's Painting of Flowers, Birds, Animals and Landscapes was published in Beijing; he traveled to the Mainland and the Soviet Union.

In 1991, he traveled to the United States, and his works were co-sponsored by Zhan Yatang, Eastern Union Art Center and Kaohsiung Spring and Autumn Art Center in Taipei. Zhan Yatang of Taiwan published Selected Works of Yang Shanshen; sketched in Taiwan; and the calligraphy Dugong Department Poetry was inscribed in the stele forest of Jingzhou, Hubei Province.

In 1993, at the invitation of Taipei Municipal Art Museum, a solo exhibition of calligraphy and painting was held, and Catalogue of Yang Shanshen's Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition was published; The Collection of Secret Residence-Yang Shanshen's Works Exhibition was published in Taiwan; and he traveled to South America.

In 1994, the works were collected by the Taipei Palace Museum with about 80 frames. In December, he went to Hubei to sketch.

In March 1995, the Hong Kong Museum of Art sponsored the "Yang Shanshen Art Retrospective Exhibition" and published the picture album "Lingnan Style". In August, I visited Yellowstone Park in the United States; in October, I visited Beijing for sketching; in November, I went to Fujian for sketching.

In April 1996, he went to Luofu Mountain in Guangdong Province to sketch and visit relatives in Chixi; in May, he went to Wudang Mountain and Shennong Mountain in Hubei Province; in August, he traveled to South America and Cuba; in October, he traveled to South America and Zimbabwe to sketch, the Cape of Good Hope and Victoria Falls; and in December, he traveled around Taiwan Island to sketch.

In 1997, he painted Hong Kong Bauhinia Flower for Hong Kong Return Memorial Book, and went to Shaoguan, Nanhua Temple and Zhuji Lane in northern Guangdong to sketch.

In February 1998, Chen Chenhua of Hong Kong published "Yang Shanshen Painting Collection". In March, the Macao Municipal Hall sponsored "Yang Shanshen Painting Exhibition" and published a collection of paintings. In June, he went to Zhongshan Waterfront in Guangdong to sketch; in August, he went to Qingyuan and Beijiang to sketch.

In 1999, he was awarded the Visual Arts Lifelong Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Art Development Council. He traveled to Huadu, Guangdong, Malaysia and Taiwan.

In May 2000, he visited Qingyuan, Yingde, Fourth Congress, Zhaoqing, Panyu, Zhongshan and Zhuhai; in July, he was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; in September, he visited Guangxi, and the Yangshanshen Art Museum of Guangzhou Art Museum was completed; in October, he was awarded the honorary citizen of Guangzhou by the Guangzhou Municipal Government, and went to Hangzhou and Moganshan to sketch his life; and in October, he went to Guangdong. Sanshui sketches his 87th birthday in Sanshui.

In March 2001, I went to Yangjiang, Yangchun, Xinhui, Jiangmen, Shunde, Zhongshan and Zhuhai for sketching; in May, I went to Angkor Kiln in Cambodia for sketching; I created hundreds of flower scrolls, 20-foot giant pine trees and a couplet of giant couplets.

In January 2002, Zhongshan held a "Spring Wind at the End of the Pen" exhibition by Yang Shanshen, and published "Spring Wind at the End of the Pen" - Yang Shanshen's Art World.

On May 15, 2004, Yang Shanshen died of a heart attack in Hong Kong at the age of 91.

"Yang Shanshen Art Exhibition" will hold its opening ceremony in Guangzhou Art Museum on December 18, 2007. At that time, the first editions of Yang Shanshen's Picture Book and Yang Shanshen's Biography were also held. Thanks to the cooperation of many disciples of Mr. Yang Shanshen and collectors at home and abroad, the exhibition exhibited more than 200 representative works of Yang Shanshen in various periods.

Yang Shanshen is good at painting flowers and birds, animals, figures, landscapes, and calligraphy has its own characteristics. He inherited the innovative spirit of Lingnan Painting School and blended it both at home and abroad. His paintings are novel in conception, old in brush and ink, clever and clumsy in interoperability, bold and graceful, forming a distinct personal style. Yang Shanshen has the most distinctive features of animal paintings (for the sake of convenience, this paper classifies Yang Shanshen's works on livestock, birds, amphibians, fish brochures, insects and so on into "animal paintings". The depiction of animals runs through Yang Shanshen's life, which also carries forward the fine tradition of Lingnan School of Painting which is keen on depicting animals. In modern and contemporary art circles, there are many painters who are good at drawing animals. There are famous painters such as Xu Beihong, Gao Qifeng, He Xiangning, Feng Dazhong and Zhang Shanzi, Li Keran, famous for drawing cats, Huang Kuang of donkeys, Liu Jishou, famous cat painter Cao Kejia and so on. However, in contemporary animal painting circles, there are few painters such as Yang Shanshen who have painted so many animals. His animal paintings are very extensive, ranging from feathers to beasts, from fish to grass insects, from big animals to small animals. There are many kinds of animals: chickens, ducks, geese, cats, dogs, pigs, horses, cows, rabbits and monkeys. Sheep, tiger, lion, leopard, eagle, snake, fish, rat, crow, crane, partridge, dragonfly, grasshopper, cricket, myna, flying sparrow, swallow, egret, frog, etc. Yang Shanshen is so fond of describing animals. In addition to his personal preferences and the edifying factors of Gao Jianfu, it should be said that there is a great relationship between his study experience in Japan. Yang Shanshen studied in Japan for two years. His impressions belong to the school of bamboo inbred phoenix, which is famous for its paintings of birds and animals. His paintings not only have the delicate harmony of Chinese painting and meticulous brushwork, but also incorporate a large number of Western painting techniques. There are many paintings in Japan that praise the bamboo inbred phoenix, and Yang Shanshen is undoubtedly influenced by them.

During the days, he often went to the Kyoto Zoo to sketch, "Long-tailed Pheasant" and "White Pheasant" are the sketches of the Kyoto Zoo. At the same time, in the early 20th century, Japan published a variety of animal books, including scientific and artistic aspects, such as "Specimens of the Oriental Museum". Animal painters have come to China in a large number of "magical living creatures" prints, bringing a fresh wind to the Chinese painting world. Japanese painters'interest in the biological world stimulated the interest of Chinese painters, including Yang Shanshen, in animal and plant depiction, which should be an incentive for him to devote himself to depicting animals. Rao Zongyi, Honorary Professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, highly praised Yang Shanshen's animal paintings: "Mr. Shanshen must be a master of contemporary painting, and the animals, birds and birds he wrote are not only unique today, even among the ancients, it is difficult to count a few such accomplishments." Indeed, Yang Shanshen's artistic vision is broad, breaking through traditional China. The narrow subject matter of animal painting, which depicts animals that have never been painted by predecessors, has broadened the scope of expression in the field of Chinese flower and bird painting, and has important practical significance and far-reaching historical impact on the development of Lingnan School of Animal Painting. In order to review Yang Shanshen's artistic history and display his unique artistic style, in this "Yang Shanshen Art Exhibition", there are not only magnificent landscapes, figures, animals, flowers, birds, insects and fish, but also interesting calligraphy; from banners to manuals, from fighters to pamphlets, and even sketches with rich themes. Rich, diverse forms, strive to fully reflect Yang Shanshen's artistic achievements, highlighting its influence in contemporary Chinese painting.
