刘益之，1934年9月生于广西苍梧县人，1959年9月毕业于湖北美术学院，并到中央美术学院进修，入广西艺术学院任教，教授中国画、中国美术史及书法等课程。1991年调入广西师范大学艺术系任教。著名画家黄格胜、陈玉圃、郑军里、白晓军、梁耀等均为其学生。刘益之擅长用毛笔宣纸写生，足迹遍及全国31省市和港澳台地区，近年还游历北美地区，写生作品数以千计，其理论著作也宏富，著作《六法论对中国绘画的指导与运用》获广西文艺最高奖铜鼓奖，《中国山水美学思想简史》获广西社会科学优秀成果二等奖。广西师范大学艺术系教授，中国美术家协会会员，广西美学学会理事，广西书协会员，中华诗词学会会员，享受政府特殊津贴专家。擅长山水写生，足迹遍及中国31省市及台湾。
出版的主要著作有：《桂林山水画法》、《六法论对中国绘画的指导与运用》、《中国山水美学思想简史》、《刘益之桂林山水画选》、《习字秘诀释义》等。作品有《巫山云雨》、《黄山雪松》等。《春江水暖》1995年获浙江“鸿运杯”中国书画大赛金奖。
