号紫微山房主人，1944年生于湖北，1959年至1986年在新疆生活、工作达28年之久。1963年代理新疆生产建设兵团报社美编，1979年任新疆石河子文联《绿风》诗刊社美编、编委，同年加入中国美协新疆分会，任新疆生产建设兵团美术家协会常务理事。1986年调入浙江海宁，长期担任海宁市文化馆美术室主任、市美协副主席兼秘书长。1997年评为副研究馆员，获浙江省自学成才奖。2001年客居北京，2007年返回海宁。现为中国画家协会理事、中国文化管理学会艺术专业委员会副主任、华夏艺术交流协会副会长、张宗祥书画院艺术顾问。在全国、省、市展出和发表美术作品1000余件（含文字稿），出版连环画、年画、年历多种。有《朱自谦画集》（西泠印社出版社出版）面世。
