原名勋略，曾用名者、庵，别名爱绿草堂主，广东揭阳人。擅长中国画。1935年毕业于上海美专国画系。1947年曾求学南洋群岛。历任广东汕头地区中学教员、校长、教务主任，汕头市工艺美术研究所专业画家，汕头画院副院长、名誉院长，广东省六届人大代表，汕头市七届人大常委，汕头市五届政协常委。
作品有《欧阳修》、《中山陵》、《神仙鱼》等。出版有《王兰若画集》一、二??王兰若、三册及《王兰若、谢海若、刘昌潮中国画选》。
20世纪30年代求学于上海美专国画系，师承黄宾虹，刘海粟，潘天寿，诸乐三等。1947年在曼谷、新加坡、槟榔屿、吉隆坡等地旅行写生，举办画展，蜚声南洋。长期在潮汕地区从事艺术教育和创作，学生中多名成为中国画坛中重要人物。先后在国内各地及美国、法国、新加坡、日本、澳大利亚、泰国等国家举办画展。出版个人作品集十余部。多幅作品为故宫博物院，中国美术馆收藏。向广东美术馆捐赠作品70幅;向汕头市博物馆捐赠书画作品160幅，并于该馆中辟专馆陈列其捐赠作品;2011年荣获汕头市文化艺术终身成就奖。2012年人民美术出版社出版了《中国近现代名家画集——王兰若》。曾任中国美术家协会会员、汕头文联名誉主席、汕头画院名誉院长、汕头美协名誉主席。
