1937年毕业于上海美专(今南京艺术学院) ,1938年在延安鲁艺美术系学习。 早年在武汉政治部三厅 、重庆文化工作委员会工作,曾在重庆育才学校美术组任教,并当选重庆中国木刻研究会、 上海中华全国木刻协会常务理事,香港人间画会理事。
1949年以来,历任上海行知艺术学校 美术组主任,北京《美术研究》、《世界美术》副主编,《版画》、《美术》杂志主编、《 中国新文艺大系1976—1982美术集》主编,《当代中国的美术》主编,《美育丛书》主编, 《外国版画百图》主编,中央美术学院教授,中国版画家协会秘书长、副主席、主席,中国 美术家协会理事、常务理事、副主席、党组书记、顾问。 出版有《王琦版画集》,论著有 《艺术形式的探索》、《论外国美术》、《美术笔谈》,作品有《人民万岁》、《一日千里 》、《晚归》、《古墙老藤》等。率领中国美术家代表团出访德、荷、卢、日、美、马来西 亚和香港。主持国内和国际性学术研讨会多次。获中国新兴版画杰出贡献奖、获日本东京富 士美术馆荣誉奖、获法国金质十字奖章。
2013年04月12日近代版画家王琦接受了中国艺术网的专访,当记者问到,对于自己的艺术经验你有什么看法。他回答说:“在实践的过程中,深切感到,艺术道路越走越长,而人生的道路越走越短。因此,对自己在艺术创作上的要求,也越来越迫切,必须以只争朝夕的精神,在不断地实践中作顽强的艰苦奋斗。”从中我们可以看出来,这位年逾耄耋的老人近几年在艺术上取得的丰硕成果,更看到了他那种生命不息、创作不止,不断前进、努力求索的可贵精神。

On December 7, 2016, Mr. Wang Qi, a famous printmaker and art theorist, died at 11:48 a.m. in Beijing at the age of 98.
Mr. Wang Qi was a member of the Chinese National Academy of Painting and a researcher of the Print Academy. He was the Secretary of the Party branch of the Chinese Artists Association and the chairman of the Chinese Print Artists Association. He was one of the founders of Chinese Print Art, the last participant in the new woodcut movement in China, and the last remaining student of the Lu Art Department in Yan'an.
He graduated from Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1937 (now Nanjing Academy of Art), and studied in Lu Art Department in Yan'an in 1938. In his early years, he worked in the Third Hall of the Political Department of Wuhan and the Chongqing Cultural Work Committee. He taught in the Fine Arts Group of Chongqing Yucai School and was elected as the executive director of Chongqing China Woodcut Research Association, Shanghai All-China Woodcut Association and Hong Kong Human Painting Association.
Since 1949, he has been the director of the Fine Arts Group of Shanghai Xingzhi Art School, the deputy editor of Beijing Fine Arts Research and World Fine Arts, the editor-in-chief of Printing, Fine Arts Magazine, the editor-in-chief of Art Collection 1976-1982 of New Chinese Literature and Art Department, the editor-in-chief of Contemporary Chinese Art, the editor-in-chief of Aesthetic Education Series and the foreign edition. Editor-in-chief, Professor of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Secretary-General, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of China Print Artists Association, Director, Executive Director, Vice-Chairman, Secretary of Party Group and Consultant of China Artists Association. Wang Qi's Printing Collection has been published. His works include Exploration of Art Form, On Foreign Art and Painting Talk. His works include Long Live the People, A Thousand Miles a Day, Late Return, Old Wistering on Ancient Wall, etc. He led a delegation of Chinese artists to Germany, Holland, Luxembourg, Japan, the United States, Malaysia and Hong Kong. He has hosted many national and international academic seminars. He was awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award of China's Emerging Printing, the Honorary Award of Fuji Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan, and the Golden Cross Medal of France.
On April 12, 2013, Wang Qi, a modern printmaker, accepted an interview with China Art Network. When asked by a reporter, what's your opinion on his artistic experience? He answered, "In the process of practice, I deeply feel that the road of art is getting longer and longer, while the road of life is getting shorter and shorter. Therefore, the demand for their own artistic creation is becoming more and more urgent. We must strive hard and persistently in practice with the spirit of seizing the day and night." We can see from it that the old man who is over the age has made great achievements in art in recent years, and we can also see his precious spirit of endless life, endless creation, continuous progress and hard pursuit.
