沙清泉(1916—1998)回族，江苏镇江人。生于上海，但他的大半辈子却是在河南度过的，骨灰也撒在了滚滚东流的黄河中。沙清泉先生是我国新兴木刻版画运动的推行者和实践者。
早在上个世纪30年代，先生即投身于鲁迅先生所创导的新兴木刻版画运动，参加抗战七君子李公朴创办的木刻研究班和邹韬奋先生倡导的上海职业界抗敌救亡工作。以刀为笔，以刀带枪，创作了大量宣传抗敌救亡、呼吁团结抗战的木刻版画作品，是中华全国木刻界抗敌协会（后更名为中国木刻研究会）的创始人之一。先生先后在河南新郑、禹县、鲁山、叶县、洛阳；陕西兴平、西安、汉中、韩城；河北石家庄等地举办抗战救亡版画展。1944年，其抗战代表作《天灾？人祸！》《逃亡》《保卫祖国的巨人》等参加世界反法西斯巡回展，曾在美、英、苏、印等国巡回展出。沙清泉先生早期抗日救亡、反法西斯的作品可以说是中国版画界抗日救亡的一面旗帜。
新中国成立后，沙清泉先生自河北调至河南省文联从事美术编辑和创作工作。期间创作了大批反映新中国改天换地、人民当家做主的优秀作品，受到广泛好评。1956年先生遭受错误路线的冲击，被停止工作，下放劳动。然而先生在长期受到非正常待遇的同时，仍然对生活充满希望，对人民充满着无限的热爱，从未放下他视为生命，对社会带来光明、希望、快乐和幸福的刻刀，他刀耕不辍，大量优秀的作品就是在这种环境中诞生的。正如我们看到的《小菊》《女焊工》《假日》《晚归》《师徒》《粮仓》《春燕》《探春》《铜墙铁壁》《晨曦》等作品，先生热爱生活、宁静淡泊、玉洁冰清、铁骨柔肠之个性若在眼前。上个世纪70年代末，艺术与我们伟大的民族一起迎来了自己的春天。沙清泉先生更是焕发了艺术青春，以手中的刻刀奏响着歌唱祖国、歌唱改革开放的华美乐章。《烟雨昆明湖》所表现的静谧祥和；《山乡晨曲》所表现的春江水暖的欢快；《少林寺山门《嵩岳北魏砖塔》《苍岩古刹》所表现的盎然生机、古刹新貌使人神往；《鸡公山报晓峰》《初冬新绿》《春绿太行》《千年虬龙》《闹春》《昂首阔步》《黄河春潮》《太行牧歌》，无不向人们诉说着祖国天翻地覆的变化，给人愉悦、催人奋进。这是一个老艺术家对艺术、对民族、对国家的真挚情怀。1991年，中国美术家协会授予沙清泉先生“三四十年代有贡献的老版画家”奖章。
沙清泉先生去世后，其家属将先生毕生创作的艺术作品和创作原版计200多幅捐赠给了他的家乡——江苏镇江博物馆。2010年前后，先生的六位子女，又将他们手中珍藏的部分作品计170多幅捐赠给了河南省美术馆，填补了河南美术史的一项空白。
青年时代的沙清泉在上海用一把修脚刀当木刻刀开始了他的刀刻人生。淞沪战役后，他跟部队撤往后方，途中失散，只身一人随难民潮颠沛流离到了河南。一路上打短工、要饭维持生计，就这样，他仍未忘记自己是个战士，栖身在马棚、羊圈里时，也常常拿出从不离身的刻刀，捡一块木片或砖头刻画出一幅幅激励人民鼓舞抗争的作品。1944年，他的作品被世界反法西斯联盟选出，代表中国到苏、美、英、印等多个国家巡展，为中国抗日军民赢得了世界人民的尊重理解和支持。
抗日战争胜利后，沙清泉留在河南并建立了家庭。新中国成立后，有关方面邀请他到北京在中国最高艺术殿堂任职，他再次选择留在河南。1950年，河南省文联在开封成立，沙清泉调入省文联任美术创作员和美术编辑，成为河南省文联第一代文艺工作者。
上世纪90年代，版画因费时费力且效益不佳而日渐衰微，年过七旬的沙清泉经常骑着自行车四处奔波，采风创作，用他的话说：要是早些年能这样该多好。他把自己刻印出的版画作品，像当年抗战时流亡途中那样，用细细的线绳挂在中学、大学校园里的树间展览并亲自当解说员。
沙清泉的女儿沙柳说，父亲晚年只要有创作写生的机会就不会放弃。有一次为了跟几个年轻画家到豫西一个煤矿体验生活，夜里和医生钻窗户到医疗室内拔了仅剩的8颗牙，第二天嘴里含着纱布就出发了。
曾与马达在上海创办木刻研究班。1938年中国木刻界抗敌协会成立，选为理事，嗣后两届均为理事，并为陕西木刻指导员。曾出版拓印木刻《刀痕》一、二集及选集。抗战时，多幅创作选送英、印、美、苏展出。木刻《天灾?人祸!》选入《抗战八年木刻选集》；《松鼠与狼》1981年参加香港举办鲁迅先生百年诞辰展。部分作品在美《华侨日报》、《北美日报》发表。八、九十年代被邀到全国大、中小城市展出廿次，1994年南京出版《刀痕》画集。中国美术馆、河南省文史馆等处收藏多幅作品。荣获中国新兴版画奖。曾任河南省版画学会副会长、郑州市版画研究会名誉会长、省中山书画院副院长等职，河南省文史馆馆员。
