杨厚兴（1915-1992）笔名旭东。江西省黎川县日峰镇下桥人。从事瓷板画像艺术创作60年，为我国瓷板画的艺术发展作出了重要贡献。被授予“工艺美术大师”的称号。全国工艺美术学会理事、中国美术家协会会员、江西美协理事、江西政协委员。杨厚兴从小便随父从黎川迁至南昌。小学毕业后，师从瓷板画家吴月山学艺，由于他刻苦和勤奋，深得师傅的器重，后以画瓷板画谋生。
瓷板画，又称瓷上肖像画，是在中国传统绘画法、陶瓷彩绘和西方摄影术基础上发展起来的，
是绘画艺术与烧瓷工艺的巧妙结合，具有浓郁的赣文化特点。瓷板画约创始于清朝1892年，创始人为邓碧珊，由其徒弟梁兑石发扬光大。民国初年，南昌人梁兑石在中山路繁华地段开设丽泽轩瓷庄，聘请艺人按顾客要求绘制肖像和粉彩瓷器，开创瓷板画在南昌发展的先河。在他的带动下，各类瓷像馆陆续出现，同时也诞生了梁燮亭、杨厚兴、吴月山等一批瓷板画家。
“天地山川收笔底，衣冠人物出毫端”，杨厚兴的画，可谓丹青独创一家风，他以人物为主，兼画山水、人物舞蹈和古代传统画。尤其是他的人物画像，笔法细腻，色彩讲究，人物形态逼真，细腻，质感等均属国内外一流水平。1933年，他的作品被选送到美国芝加哥参加世界博览会，一经展出立刻引起轰动。不久，他的作品在南昌市中山纪念堂展出，并获得好评。20世纪30年代，为美国好莱坞拍的英文版《王宝钏》画过剧照，并参加美国芝加哥博览会，受到好评。30年代中期，杨厚兴开始尝试在黑白瓷像的基础上再罩一层彩色，重新烧制，技法和效果类似上海的擦笔月份牌年画。直到50年代初，他才试制成功直接用彩色绘画瓷上肖像，使瓷上肖像画的色彩更为丰富，表现力也更强。
1948年，在南昌开设“最明轩画庄”，成为南昌市权威瓷像画庄之一。1954年，先后在南昌市瓷像合作小组、合作社、南昌工艺美术厂工作。1956年加入中国共产党。曾任合作社副主任、厂长、名誉厂长，省、市政协委员，中国美术家协会会员、江西分会理事，中国工艺美术学会理事。多次被评为省、市先进工作者和劳动模范。1979年，国家轻工部首次授予杨厚兴等34人为“中国工艺美术家”（1988年改称中国工艺美术大师）称号，他也是瓷上肖像画作者至今为止唯一获此殊荣者。获高级工艺美术师职称。
他的作品多次参加全国工艺美术展览，多次到广交会出场表演，均获得好评。1957年，作品《新疆舞》、《电影演员》，参加全国工艺美术展览；1959年，作品《齐白石肖像》、《白杨肖像》，参加庆祝建国十周年展览；1964年，作品《洗衣小女孩》，参加五省卫生美术展获优秀作品奖；1971年的《剑舞》，1979年的《周总理遗像》、《幻想曲》、《柯达克人》、《日本少女》，1981年的《契普斯的女儿被劫》等均获优秀作品奖。作品“真挚的友谊”照片在《装饰》杂志发表；“印度尼西亚舞”彩照发表在《人民画报》1980年第三期。作品多幅分别被中国工艺美术馆、江西省工艺美术馆收藏。个人六次在“广交会”作现场技艺表演。在广交会上，其作品《秦怡肖像》、《张伐肖像》、《周信芳剧照》、《梅兰芳<洛神>剧照》、《伊文思》、《爱因斯坦》、《西方女郎》及《春江花月夜》、《霓裳曲》等深受外宾和海外侨胞欢迎。作品远销美国、日本、苏联、泰国、新加坡和港澳地区。1985年1月又于南昌举办过个人作品展。论文《瓷板画像的创作》登载在1982年3月由江西省工艺美术学会和省工艺美术研究所合作编印的“论文选”第一集。
从1964年春季开始，杨厚兴受广州中国出口商品交易会组委会的邀请，连续在六届广交会上作瓷上肖像画现场表演，大大扩大了瓷上肖像画艺术在世界各国和地区来宾中的影响。当时，广交会会刊以及港澳的报纸、报刊都有专文报道。此后，杨厚兴先后为英国伊丽莎白女王、首相撒切尔夫人，美国尼克松总统等多位世界名人画过肖像，在世界艺术领域中具有了有一定的影响。他的作品，被国际友人誉为“瓷像艺术的精华”。
杨厚兴的作品笔调细腻，形象准确，光影层次丰富，人物表情生动，人物的肌肉、发须、服装以及配景中的玻璃、竹木、金属物件等，质感逼真，生动传神。他的作品既有中国画传神的特点，又将摄影、油画、粉画、水彩等技艺应用于瓷画，为瓷板画的创新作了大胆尝试。他还利用新材料。新工艺、新设计，成功地创制了白玉片画和萤光双面画等新品种。在白玉片上，将瓷用颜料绘成油画和国画效果的人物、风景，用传统的线描加彩的方法画《木兰从军》、《仕女图》等小台屏，借鉴苏州双面绣的效果，创制了双面台屏《热带鱼》、《金鱼》等，均获得了其他画种所不能达到的艺术效果。中央电视台还向全国播放介绍他的瓷板画艺术的专题片。
他关心家乡的经济建设，为家乡陶瓷工艺品生产培养人才，亲自为黎川华山瓷厂送广交会参展的大型板屏风作画，并将画资数万元捐给家乡扶贫事业。晚年，他仍致力于艺术创作，这期间，他还收了好几个弟子。1992年，在南昌市水观音亭一幢花园式的小楼里，杨厚兴走完了77岁人生之路。（1915—1992年），江西南昌瓷版画工艺美术家。
