1942年10月生于北京，1967年毕业于中央美术学院中国画系。现为中央民族大学美术学院教授、学术委员会主任、博士生导师、中国艺术研究院博士生导师、中国美术家协会第六届理事、中国美协线描艺术研究会会长、中国工笔画学会副会长、中国现代没骨画派主持人、东方现代泼绘艺术研究会会长、享受国务院特殊贡献津贴优秀专家。
从师和受教于著名画家俞致贞、田世光、高冠华、郭味蕖、李苦禅等先生。精于工笔没骨花鸟，擅长泼绘写意。其工笔没骨作品分别荣获首届及二、三届中国工笔画大展金奖、银奖和金奖，泼绘作品获中国书画摄影大奖赛金奖。曾获中国文联颁发的97中国画坛百杰画家奖，国家科技办颁发的优秀人民艺术家奖，以及世界华人艺术家奖，20世纪国际艺术名家教授成就大奖等多种奖项。出版多种个人专集。发表多篇学术论文。其辞条和业绩被收录于国内外多种权威名人辞典和名人录。

以全方位的宏观思维及现代审美意识表现花鸟世界。立今承古、立中融西；立足本根，放眼未来；立足民族精神、展观东方意韵。注重承传开拓、中西融会、工写结合、强调团块结构、光色表现和构成意识。
