张充仁(1907—1998）上海人。擅长雕塑、绘画。1914年入土山湾美术工场照相制版间随爱尔兰籍导师习素描及法文。1931年留学比利时，在布鲁塞尔皇家美术学习雕塑，1935年毕业于比利时布鲁塞尔皇家美术学院。1936年在上海举办归国展览，开办“充仁画室”。历任之江大学教授，上海美专教授，中国美术家协会上海分会副秘书长，上海油画雕塑创作室主任。出版《张充仁雕塑选》、《张充仁水彩画选》等，作品《无产阶级革命创造中华人民共和国》曾获上海纪念性雕塑一等奖。
一个矛盾得令人难以置信的题目：一个能被这么多外国人（而且主要还是欧洲发达国家的）知道的中国人，那在本国不早该家喻户晓了吗？可我要是问你张充仁是谁，你答得上来吗？在欧洲，这个名字几乎尽人皆知。据法国文化部估计，在世界上的法语系国家中，知道张充仁这个名字的总计约有10亿人。
大多数国人对这个名字恐怕是闻所未闻。但要是提到“丁丁历险记”中的《蓝莲花》的话，我想大多数人，一定是如雷贯耳。
《蓝莲花》里的中国向导“张”的原型就是埃尔热在创作此书时结识的一位中国留学生——艺术家张充仁。
张充仁是我国当代著名的艺术家，他在油画、水彩画和雕塑等方面的造诣都很深。曾为密特朗和邓小平塑像，堪称一代雕塑大师、中外文化交流使者、现代中国雕塑艺术奠基人之一。
1907年阴历8月18日，张充仁生于上海徐家汇，当时一个天主教聚集之处。父亲张少圃是个木雕艺人，母亲则擅长刺绣，能绣一手很好的花卉、人物。张充仁耳濡目染，自幼酷爱绘画。
1921年，张充仁进入爱尔兰人安敬斋（F.Enry）创办的土山湾印书馆照相制版部学习、工作。利用业余时间他还学习了素描和法文。这为张充仁的艺术人生奠定了一定的基础。
张充仁小学三年级时，图画成绩得了第一名。但在颁奖时，因大风吹落奖品上的纸条，错颁他为第二名。此事在他一生的心灵中留下深刻的印记：“这好像在冥冥之中启示我，虽然我是第一名，但得到的只能是第二名，而这样的事一直持续到我的一生”。无论是看他生平或读他的传记，我们都能得到这种印象。张充仁先生于1931年9月乘邮轮赴马赛，10月即考入比利时皇家美术学院，师从巴斯天（AlfredBastien），在油画班里张充仁是巴斯天教授最得意的学生之一。1933年，美术学院学期结束，张充仁获油画风景第一名、禽兽解剖第一名、透视学第一名、油画构图（人物）第二名、人体解剖第二名、图案构成第二名，由布鲁塞尔市长授奖。4月15日，鉴于上述成绩，当时中国驻比使馆为他颁发“三育奖章”。
1934年，经陆徵祥和鲁汶大学戈赛神父介绍。结识比利时漫画家埃尔热，为埃尔热创作中国题材的故事即《蓝莲花》（《丁丁在中国》）提供了无私的帮助和倾注了全部的热情，两人也从此建立了长达半个世纪的友谊。当埃尔热在四十年后与张充仁通信时，仍然这样写道：“是你让我继马可·波罗之后认识了中国，认识了她的文明、她的思想，她的艺术和艺术家，我仍然专心于《道德经》和《庄子》，这两本书也是你向我推荐的。”1935年毕业，获布鲁塞尔市政府颁赠金质奖。他在留学期间，秉承的是罗丹的现实主义画。
张充仁回国后，在小洋房里创办了充仁画室。先后培训学生300多人，才子遍布海内外，其中较著名的就有：严友人、邱瑞敏等，为我国绘画、雕塑事业的发展做出了杰出的贡献。直到文革开始。
当时充仁画室的大门是敞开着的，有许多人会来，甚至美专毕业学生也会过来。当时的张充仁是靠学生的学费来维持生计的，但是他却收了许多交不起学费的学生，也许出于对自己的身世的思考，他有时更加关照这些“穷学生”。有空的时候，他还会带学生去复兴公园、郊区去写生。先画一张示范作品，有时是油画，更多的是水彩画。
在1945年中国解放后，许多艺术家纷纷逃亡海外，他们也劝说张充仁一起走，但是张充仁说：“共产党人不是些不学无术的人，我看过他们的报纸，他们也喜爱美术，而且‘充仁画室’还有这么多学生……”
1979年为上海东南纺织厂成立30周年设计了国内第一枚大铜章——《上海东南纺织厂成立30周年纪念》，由上海造币厂采用纯铜限量精铸。成为了当代中国铜章艺术的引领者。
1985年应法国艺术收藏馆之请，张充仁特为自己雕塑了一只右手，与毕加索、罗丹的手，一同为该馆永久收藏，全球艺术家获此殊荣者仅此三人而已。然而，张充仁在其祖国所获的声誉，长期以来与其艺术成就并不匹配，现今在中国许多历史系和艺术系的很多大学生，都不知道他的经历。这是耐人寻味的。1998年10月8日，张充仁病逝。张充仁生前还曾为许多名人塑像，如马相伯、于右任、蒋介石、冯玉祥、司徒雷登、聂耳、埃尔热、密特朗、邓小平。每一种塑像均能传达人物的神韵及内心世界，使观者感到作品既来自于生活，又超拔于生活，他的风景水彩或油画，让人有身历其境之感觉的同时无疑又能看出作者对于自然和人生平静而安详的思考和悟解。
马相伯，居住在土山湾，因为张充仁的母亲，与马家有渊源，所以马相伯与他关系很好，按辈分，应叫马相伯太外公。

同年，油画《凉风动荡》参展于布鲁塞尔万国博览会，并考入雕塑高级班，师从雕塑家隆波教授。
1934年，与埃尔热合作创作《蓝莲花——丁丁在中国》连环画。
1935年，在比利时皇家美术学院毕业。
1935年11月返国回上海。
1932年年举办张充仁归国展览会，并建充仁画室。抗战爆发后，创作油画《流民》《恻隐之心》及大量的水彩画，为抗战服务。
1941年举办个人雕塑绘画展，被誉为中国水彩画大家。
1946年创作油画《满目疮痍》，作品表现民不聊生的社会现实而广为流传。
1947～1949年任之江大学(今浙江大学)建筑系水彩画教授。1979年任上海画院油画雕塑创作室主任、全国城市雕塑艺术委员会委员。
1985年应邀访法，并应法国文化部之请创作《爱尔席》塑像。
1988年，应法国政府之请为密特朗总统塑像，并被聘为法兰西艺术院院士。
1991年接受上海市政府之请，从法国返沪创作《聂耳》塑像，引起轰动。
1993年完成《邓小平》塑像。
1998年10月8日病逝于法国。
