徐冰

徐冰(1955年),祖籍中国浙江温岭,生于重庆。1977年考入中央美术学院版画系,1981年毕业留校任教,1987年获中央美术学院硕士学位。1990年接受美国威斯康辛大学的邀请,做为荣誉艺术家移居美国。现为独立艺术家,生活工作于纽约。

徐冰,1955年出生于重庆,1981年毕业于中央美术学院版画系,并留校任教。1987年毕业于中央美术学院,获硕士学位。曾于1990年受美国威斯康辛大学邀请为荣誉艺术家,移居美国。2008年回国,现为中央美术学院副院长、教授、博士生导师。
在自20世纪八十年代末开始创作的成名作《天书》系列中,他亲自设计刻印数千个“新汉字”,以图象性、符号性等议题深刻探讨中国文化的本质和思维方式,成为中国当代艺术史上的经典。九十年代移居美国后陆续创作《新英文书法》、《鬼打墙》、《地书》等。此外,本世纪以来徐冰的创作面向更为丰富,特别是其日益关注的艺术介入社会的题材,《烟草计划》、《木林 森》、《凤凰》等均是颇具深度的代表作品。鉴于在当代艺术领域的杰出贡献,1999年他荣膺美国文化界最高奖“麦克·阿瑟天才奖”;2004年以“9·11”废墟尘埃为材料所做的作品《尘埃》,在英获得世界视觉艺术最大奖项——首届“Artes·Mundi国际当代艺术奖”;2007年在荣获美国版画艺术终身成就奖。

作品赏析

《凤凰》:低碳也好,环保也罢,它终究无法脱离“破烂”的本质
世博会开幕前,徐冰亲赴上海,完成了《凤凰》在世博园内最后的吊装。历时两年多才创作完成的《凤凰》声名远扬,今春在北京今日美术馆艺术广场首次亮相,而在世博园露面之前,俨然成为这里的一个传说。
早先,法国密特朗基金会想把《凤凰》这件他们认为最能体现中国智慧的世博公共艺术品设立在世博轴上,但可惜没有能让《凤凰》飞起来的吊点。之后,《凤凰》几经辗转,它12吨的体重和一身看上去摇摇欲坠的“羽毛”——其实是建筑工地上的垃圾——必须受到前所未有的防雨保护,这造成了《凤凰》历经主题馆、中国馆等场地的数次转移。最终,它出现在世博园“宝钢大舞台”室内——这里既有原来废旧钢铁厂建筑的遗迹,充满了流水线以及钢架结构强硬又有张力的线条。《凤凰》莅临,相对于周边环境既独立又和谐统一,它仿佛找到了自己的“前世”和出生的地方。
在中国的建筑工地,《凤凰》曾经是一堆堆任人践踏的垃圾。旅美18年,徐冰回国后第一次踏进北京CBD的工地时,就被这些建筑废料的原始粗陋的美感,被高楼大厦背后的真相深深吸引。他同意了委托方的邀请,决定用这些建筑废料制作艺术品,最终的形态将是中国人熟悉并喜爱的吉祥图腾——凤凰。
他迷上这些垃圾。于是,塑料安全帽、屡见不鲜的红蓝彩条布、铁锹、钢管等等统统成为艺术创作的材料。徐冰说:“我希望它很浪漫,很美,同时又很凶猛,带有神性,怪异同时又非常现实。它用一种非常低廉的材料来打扮自己,让自己变得很有尊严,又带着伤痕累累的感觉,这就是《凤凰》的感人之处。”
按照计划,《凤凰》将被放置在北京CBD某栋新建的大厦之中,据“楼书”描述,这座建筑采用透明玻璃为主体,按照钻石的形状建造,而《凤凰》将被放在辉煌的大堂中。可以想像它那粗糙带有原始气息的样子,将与现代化建筑的精致科学,以及资本被炫耀的光芒形成强烈的反差,而这种对比恰恰可以将人们的思考带入繁荣背后的现实之中。然而《凤凰》的诞生却历经磨难,特别是金融危机的影响,委托方资金的匮乏,几乎断绝了它出生的可能。
《凤凰》的难产,又为这件艺术作品增加了看不见的内容。现在看来,这些艰难的过程都成就了它生命中的趣味。《凤凰》经历两年多的曲折后,在今日美术馆甫一亮相,就引来媒体关注,比如将它与当前流行的“环保”、“低碳”这些概念扯上关系,这无非是《凤凰》给大家制造的话题或者说一种假象而已。实际上,《凤凰》无法脱离它“破烂”的本质。用徐冰本人的话来描述,“它既凶又美,用这些破的材料弄出这么个大鸟来,感觉凤凰自己在制造一种伪装。好像凤凰为本身的生理做驱动,它就要梳理羽毛,让自己变得好看起来。就像穷人没有好的化妆品一样,最后用什么东西给自己乱抹一通,这也是民间艺术大红大绿的来源。”
就是这只经过认真“乱抹”的大鸟,以其富于表现力的艺术语言,在民俗的、当代的、艺术的、社会的这些概念中自由游走,从北京的CBD到上海的世博园,成为非常令人瞩目的中国艺术作品。
风格:“美”或“丑”并不重要,风格、流派也没有那么重要
《凤凰》诞生后,最有意思的是它“嫁鸡随鸡”的性格——放在北京CBD,它散发着一种对中国现代化进程的隐喻和思考;放在上海世博会,又增添了对历史绵延的追溯;而最终它也许会被台湾收藏家带往宝岛,或者会成为那里的人们熟悉又陌生的图腾。
伴随着《凤凰》的争论也纷至沓来。根据调查,路过《凤凰》现场的老百姓,包括一部分高级知识分子对它都非常喜欢,疑问来自艺术圈本身。比如,有人认为它的造型太柔美,特别是晚上点燃灯光的时候。也有人持相反的看法,觉得它看上去十分丑陋。还有批评的声音指出,这个作品太笨了,太“费劲”了——徐冰过去的作品都是四两拨千斤的,但这个变成“千斤拨四两”,因此太不“徐冰”了……
在采访中,徐冰并不回避《凤凰》带来的这些争议话题。他一笑说,在他看来“美”或“丑”并不重要,那不是他做艺术的出发点,甚至所谓风格也没有那么重要。“没必要认定这是徐冰的还是谁的。之所以有些艺术家被认定为某种流派不敢移动半步,是因为在视觉过剩的当下,任何一种所谓的风格都是很难被确认的,收藏家从收藏层面也需要这种确认。这样由于许多方面的原因,造成艺术家一辈子都在做一种风格的东西。但这不是我考虑的事情。我从不把保持、建立、完善自己风格作为追求,从来不从材料、风格、流派入手考虑艺术。我希望人们从中获得的满足是一种有关看待事物的态度,思维能得到启发。就像《凤凰》的创作,我感到高兴和满意的是它的唯一性——它的这种感觉在世界任何其他地方都不可能获得,也不可能诞生。”。

2007 以中国书法为基本元素的平面作品在纽约大都会博物馆展出。新作《地书》以新媒体互动方式在纽约MoMA展出。由于“对文字、 语言和书籍溶智的使用,对版画与当代艺术这两个领域间的对话和沟通所产生的巨大影响”全美版画家协会授予徐冰“版画艺术终身成就奖”。
2011年徐冰在美国弗吉尼亚美术博物馆展出了最新制作的虎皮地毯,利用香烟两端的颜色描绘出虎皮的样子,共用了50万根香烟。
